Founders, you're losing deals by not having a clear discovery call plan. I've seen this a lot where founders looking to scale up their early sales efforts are going into it thinking the product will get them through the sale In most cases, this isn't the truth You need to have some sort of framework to make the selling motion more repeatable Instead of demo'ing the product, try learning more about them and their challenges first. Your goal should be to know enough to build a customized demo for them. This will help in building solid relationships, build value throughout the process and likely speed up deals on the back end of it. The Solution: Prepare a solid business plan with detailed financial projections. Work with a financial advisor to enhance your credibility. The best way to get VC money is to not need VC money. This may sound strange, but it's a lot like chasing a dog that's off a leash. If you run after the dog, they'll assume you are desperate for them and run away. If on the other hand, you can get their attention, and then run away from them, they'll be way more likely to chase after you. VCs get pitched by desperate founders a lot and will almost always screen those companies out. The two things you can do: 1) Build, set goals, meet those goals, grow your company as fast as you can without external capital. 2) When the time comes that you have something investable, reach out with the confidence that you are only raising to accelerate the growth. If you pitch saying "we need" or even flinch with cashflow problems, you'll be back to chasing. #founder #startups #vc

Did you know that YC founders get a secret weapon… and it’s not what you think. “Bookface” is YC’s internal social network. It was needed because YC had funded larger batches and the hardest part of a community is knowing who is in it and who you can trust and ask for help. On the platform, founders share real methods and advice that would break if it were shared widely It’s secret knowledge shared with a trust-first community - answering 80% of the questions a founder can have about building and selling a product, be it to clients, candidates or investors. Before the platform, if you had a B2B startup, you had to reach out cold to potential customers. Now there are over 1000 YC companies you can sell your service to and all of their contact information is in Bookface. As a result, YC alumni companies are often over 50% of your new sales during YC. It’s superpowers like this that make YC deals so attractive compared to the norm. You are investing in a founder with a 10x network already!

If you run a #startup ecosystem You can run into trouble with your #entrepreneur members when your events become too corporate where your events feel like they are being held just for a check on the checklist or your org is going through the motions because it is sponsored content. (Your sponsor wants extra attention so their sponsorship comes with mandatory content that your members have not really asked for.) I see this checklist mentality so much in big cities and then they wonder why the ecosystem makes no REAL strides forward in impact. Entrepreneurs MANDATE events with high energy and valuable content or they won't return for the next event. And if the Entrepreneurs stop attending, your org has no members. If you are events are late day / night events, you are competing with three other factors for the Entrepreneurs. 1. Stay at the office 2. Go home to family 3. A meeting with friends at the pub 4. Or they can attend your event. Your event has to be the best of those four options. If the events are boring, they won't attend. If the content at the event misses, they will stop attending. The Entrepreneurs want access to capital and learn how to make more #sales. This is the fuel for growth towards accomplishing their dreams of generational wealth.
