I often get asked about smb acquisitions that are 'passive'... Or could become passive. Here's the thing, most of these buyers target buy looks like this: → $500k - $1.5M in Gross Revenue → $100k - $400k in SDE → Management in place → Passive ownership What you have to realize is: 1. Most of you looking here will leverage some sort of debt on deals like this which significantly impacts your ability to have 'management' AND take any sort of distribution yourselves. 2. Businesses this size simply aren't passive. They just aren't. It doesn't really exist. The owner has to play some role. The better question to ask yourself is how much $$ per hour do I make from this. 3. If the listing says it's passive, it's likely a broker writing it from their perspective and trying to get a deal done. You can't truly have 'management' in place in this range 4. Management turns over, especially during a transition. Many friends I know have bought these, turned the team over 2x in first 12 months. 5. No matter what, you'll be pretty hands on for the first 12 months. Just expect that.

#1 skill I’ve seen consistent across sales reps Is their ability to stay organized. It doesn’t mean unorganized reps can’t be successful, I know plenty that are. But a rep that can consistently execute a process will win a lot more often. This goes for: - Prospecting - Deals in early stages & follow up - Deal alignment with multiple stakeholders - Multi-threading - etc. Sadly, most deals are lost due to poor organization and follow up. $500, the cost of an SDR booking a meeting YET STILL, SDRs are told to follow up on all event leads? We need to focus our SDRs on booking high-quality meetings, right? Here's the solution. You know the drill, marketing wants every lead to be followed up from an event. But why? Each meeting an SDR creates costs around $500; that's the total cost, including salaries, tech stack, etc. So why waste that $500 on calling a prospect that will never buy? It's because businesses don't think about revenue enough; they think about the individual aspects that make up the funnel. This siloed process makes siloed thinking, where kingdoms are protected and not thinking about outcomes. We need to change this thinking. The solution: All teams will be measured on pipeline generated and revenue closed. Nothing else should matter to the Executive teams. Each department can have KPIs around leads, meetings, etc, but those are internal department metrics, nothing to do with the bottom line As you build your GTM motion, stop thinking about individual metrics that don't matter outside of your team. SDR Manager: "Do 100 activities per day using this very specific set of instructions. We created these scripts for a reason, they work, don't deviate from them." Commercial AE Manager: "You need to close 50 deals per year to make your number. Qualify hard and run our playbook." Enterprise AE Manager: "Do detailed research on an exceptionally complicated organization then develop a unique perspective on this organization's business that would get the attention of a person who has >10,000 people that they are responsible for and makes more than anyone that works at our company." If we don't encourage critical thinking on the way up the AE career path, why would we expect people to be great at it when they get to the top?

I have a friend whose OTE as an SDR is $160,000. Sounds amazing, right? But here’s the catch: only 10% of his team is actually hitting quota. He’s nowhere near earning that $160K. High earning potential is appealing—but only if it's realistic. I've interviewed many SDRs recently, and only one asked about current quota attainment. Some ways founders can get the most out of an SDR hire (our most successful customers have all done these things): 1. Put in the work ahead of time. Make 200 cold calls, send 100 personalized emails, and test LI messaging before hiring a rep. This will ensure your SDR has something to go off of once they are in the seat (plus they'll respect the fact that you rolled up your sleeves and did the grunt work). 2. Organize your collateral. You should have both sales and product collateral for them to review. Sales collateral = demo + cold call recordings, screenshots of emails that have worked. Product collateral = recorded product walk-throughs, pitch materials, industry literature etc. 3. Have very clear input expectations and output goals. Input expectations = daily activity metrics (i.e make 40 dials, send 25 personalized emails). Output goals = number of demos booked/week. NOTE: output goals should be based on REAL NUMBERS. It's not productive to ask a rep to book 10 demos in a week if you have no evidence that that is possible. 4. Set time for mock calls and call review sessions. 5. Let the rep start. The best way for them to learn is to just get going. SDRs - So many people overlook this one super obvious tactic: Schedule emails out for your prospects in other timezones (my inbox is a good example of this!). Seems simple, but many people forget. For example: If it's 3pm EST, don't send an email to your prospect in Europe. Schedule it for 4-5AM, so it lands in their inbox at 9-10AM their local time. Also, tag your prospects by region so you can call them at the right time. Many tools have this feature built in, but the issue with this is many prospects live in different areas than their area code. P.S. Find motivated sellers People who need to sell quickly for whatever reason. You will get the best deals possible this way. 2. Go off the market The best unique deals are found in places like subreddits and Facebook groups. These off market deals have a lot more alpha than the ones on market 3. Use Low Ball Offers Start with 10% of the asking price as upfront cash and a structured deal for 30-50% you'd be surprised how many sellers are open to this. I hope this helps :)
