Another martech company, Backstroke, launched in Indianapolis last month. Their platform provides AI-powered customized email messages for B2C companies. While I wish them every success, the early results are good enough to make copywriters everywhere a little nervous. I mean, if AI generates email subject lines that are more successful than those generated by humans, then what is the copywriter's role? Let's take a deep breath and look at this from a different perspective. If AI takes care of the subject lines and meta descriptions, that leaves more time for copywriters to focus on actual storytelling. And that's a good thing. Copywriters are at their best when they have time to understand what makes people tick, not when they are studying ad sets and headline data. So let's let the AI do what it does best—parse loads of data to find the most click-worthy headline. And empower copywriters to get back to the business of making human connections after someone clicks.

A lot of advertisers don’t want to plan too far ahead when budgets, product launches, and performance goals change on the daily. But every year we arrive at the holiday season push and tons of advertisers are eager to jump in and drive sales to end the year on a high note. This happens every single year. Can we just all agree to stop waiting until the last minute? Here’s some reasons why: - rates go up, inventory goes down - the quality of the content and the ad goes down because influencers are real people, too, and they don’t want to spend the week before Black Friday working on your ad - we should be prepping audiences with product education prior to the big discounted sale promo so it’s a no-brainer to your customers I like to give brands a soft cut-off of Sept 15, but the truth is, we really can’t deliver on great results if you reach out to us to book ads after Oct 15. That’s the real, hard, genuine cut-off date. It’s not me being a salesperson and trying to create a sense of urgency. This is one of those things you really can’t wait until the last minute on.

In many retail and dealer environments, transactions and visits aren't a 1:1 match. Driving people to the store is an important marketing function, and converting them to customers depends on product, environment, price, brand, sales experience... the list goes on. Think Noodles & Company—if I'm launching a new menu item, my POS can track whether people are buying it and how often. I can look at sales over time to see if it's driving foot traffic. But I need robust tools or a legacy of strong loyalty programs to know if those people are new buyers, where they're from, and if they represent new audience segments to me. Consider a shopping mall. Simon Property Group doesn't see a dollar for getting customers on-site, but nothing matters more to them when trying to get a new anchor tenant. They need great data and tools. Or a Case IH dealer - only some people who walk on the lot will buy a tractor, but I care how many people are coming, and I want to compare that to people who are converting. I can only see that with better tools. Fancy #martech isn't right for everyone, but it's a game-changer for some.
