Ensuring that the minerals that go into EV batteries (EVBs) are sustainable 2. Ensuring that batteries are used to their fullest extent 3. Ensuring recovery of critical battery minerals so they can be used over and over again To ensure EVB traceability and recovery, countries around the world are developing or implementing systems requiring the use of digital identifiers, usually QR codes, also referred to as "Battery Passports," to provide those who engage an EV battery with valuable data on materials origin, state of health and chain of custody to evidence final recycling. Since cars are imported and exported across the globe for sale, it is critical that the data to be shared by battery and auto manufacturers and accessed by users is harmonized. By harmonizing standards globally, the EV battery industry can become efficient, sustainable, and innovative while addressing challenges related to resource management, environmental and social impact, and economic growth. #automotiveindustry #evs #evbatteries

Great perspective on what is really happening in the EV market from Laurence Iliff of Automotive News. One takeaway: Auto sales act like other free markets and prices rise and fall with demand for EVs two. Incentives near $9k or more lower the price to attract buyers. OEMs at some point need to have vehicles that sell without such huge discounts.

Californian drivers appear to be losing some enthusiasm for Tesla. A California Auto Outlook report shows year-over-year Tesla registrations are down again in the state. The report, published on Monday by the California New Car Dealers Association, summarizes first-quarter vehicle registration figures statewide. The report said Tesla saw a 7.8% dip in sales in California in the first quarter, down from 54,265 in the last quarter of 2023 to 50,025 in Q1. The drop follows last quarter's 9.8% decline. The idea that adopting NACS (now more properly referred to as SAE J3400) was going to solve all the problems of public EV charging reliability was always far-fetched, and I was surprised at the time that so many people bought into it. Now that Tesla appears to be releasing its creation into the wild, reliability and interoperability issues may become more important than ever.
