Finding My Path, My Way As we celebrate Black History Month, I’ve been reflecting on the theme of Reclaiming Narratives. For me, it’s not just about honoring the stories of the past, it’s about owning and shaping our own journeys. Every path has its twists and turns, and mine has been no different. When I first moved to the UK, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was drawn to anthropology because I’m fascinated by people and culture, but life had other plans. I got pushed into a “practical” route that didn’t feel right, and for a while, I was totally lost. Then, after conversation after conversation with my people the topic around HR came up. With zero experience but a “why not” attitude, I jumped into a master’s program. No grand plan, just hoping to figure it out along the way. That’s when everything started to fall in place. I was seconded into an HR systems and data role, and suddenly, it all made sense. I wasn’t just crunching numbers, I was uncovering stories. Real insights about people, their experiences, and how the workplace could change for the better. That’s when I knew: this is where I want to be. Now, I’m using data to make real impact, helping organisations understand their people, and making sure diversity isn’t just a buzzword. And I’m doing it on my terms, with my own story leading the way. This Black History Month, it’s all about reclaiming our narratives. We don’t always have the perfect roadmap, but the journey teaches you who you are, and where you’re meant to be. 🙌🏾Don’t be afraid of detours – Your path might not always be clear, but every step teaches you something valuable. 🙌🏾Find your passion – When you’re unsure, keep exploring. The right fit might surprise you, just like data surprised me! 🙌🏾Use your skills for impact – Whatever your niche is, find ways to make a difference. In my case, it’s using data to help build better, more inclusive workplaces. 🙌🏾Ask for help – Conversations with mentors, family, or peers can open doors you never considered. Here are five key strategies for Black women to expand their network, cultivate meaningful connections, and leverage networking opportunities: 1️⃣ Seek Out Mentorship and Sponsorship: Find mentors and sponsors who can provide guidance, support, and opportunities. Mentors offer valuable advice, while sponsors actively advocate for your career advancement within the organization. 🤝 2️⃣ Join Professional Organizations and Affinity Groups: Engage with organizations and groups that focus on supporting Black professionals and women in your industry. These platforms offer networking events, workshops, and resources tailored to your career growth. 📚 3️⃣ Attend Conferences and Industry Events: Participate in conferences, seminars, and industry events to connect with like-minded professionals and thought leaders. These gatherings are excellent opportunities to exchange ideas, gain insights, and form lasting relationships. 🎤 4️⃣ Leverage Social Media and Online Communities: Utilize platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your field. Join online communities and groups that align with your interests and career goals, and actively participate in discussions to build your visibility and network. 🌐 5️⃣ Be Intentional and Authentic: Approach networking with intentionality and authenticity. About 80% of Black leaders who seek out my coaching services and aspire to become more effective and impactful leaders lack employer support. Often, they are even fearful of asking their employer for this investment. Instead, they fund it out of their own pockets. ❗Keep in mind, Black women earn 58.5% less than White men (Catalyst, 2022 via Canadian Women’s Foundation), making it challenging to invest in themselves. From my experience, these are the three common scenarios Black women face regarding coaching: 1. Unaware of Available Coaching Opportunities: Many Black employees do not know if coaching is part of their organization's talent management strategy. If they are unaware, it effectively means it isn’t accessible to them. 2. Denied Requests for Development: When Black employees ask for development opportunities, the answer is often no, or the process for approval requires a business case rationalizing the request. Excuses range from budget constraints to doubts about their potential or impact. This reflects outdated and biased talent review practices. 3. Hesitation to Advocate for Themselves: Many Black employees, even those in senior roles, feel hesitant to ask for investment in their development. This hesitation stems from a lack of normalized support and the internalized belief, based on lived experience, that they are not worthy of such investment. Although I’ve developed a self-advocacy guide to help them request these investments, it shouldn't be necessary. I’ve yet to encounter this issue with non-Black employees whose organizations contract my services. Employers, sponsors, and allies need to recognize that investing in Black women’s development through coaching is crucial. This investment should place them in environments where they feel safe, understood, and are given the space to thrive.
