Dr. Ayla Stanford, author of “Take Care of Them Like My Own: Faith, Fortitude, and a Surgeon’s Fight for Health Justice,” recently joined USA Today’s “The Excerpt” podcast for a conversation about the state of #healthcare access in the U.S., her own journey as a #HealthEquity advocate, and how we can achieve health equity. Dr. Stanford’s take on how education helps patients better communicate with healthcare providers and advocate for themselves in healthcare settings inspired my own thoughts. The patient-provider relationship is a two-way street. Our healthcare professionals need to know how to advocate for and communicate with their patients, too.   Every person deserves access to equitable, culturally competent healthcare. As Dr. Stanford notes, instilling this belief in our future healthcare workforce starts with a classroom experience that prioritizes conversations and learnings about health equity. One of the steps my team at Elsevier takes towards this is by developing inclusive learning materials, from books and e-books to content for digital solutions and platforms, that help medical students prepare to care for diverse patient populations. Happy Day After Independence Day to all my American followers, and what better way to celebrate than a rundown on some of the biggest happenings at the intersection of business, tech, and human experience? Amirite? So, let the celebration begin! Rogue AI Clone - Let's have people interact with an AI clone of me! What could possibly go wrong? A lot as Caryn Marjorie quickly learned as her fans engaged with her AI clone in ways she never imagined. What was most disturbing to her wasn't just the behavior of her fans but the way her AI clone was behaving on her behalf. Meeting Behavior Research - Study reveals that too many meetings aren't good for employees! Who would have thought? While the research had a lot of say about the rising trend of meeting volume, non-participation, and camera usage, we need to be careful not to wrongly conclude, "If we just get people back in a room together, it will all be okay." Future of AI Entertainment - Imagine a world where rather than flipping through pages of options on Netflix you had to think of everything about what you wanted to see in the media. Sounds amazing right? Not really. Ignoring the tech limitations, I don't see human behavior driving us to a world of user-generated media as a replacement for real artistic work. Real Reason for Tech Layoffs - Are GenAI models and AI Agents the nefarious secret behind why so many tech companies are wiping out their tech talent? Not according to Joe Procopio, and I think there's a lot of truth in his assessment. However, given all these things resulting in layoffs, is there any hope for human labor. Really exciting news out of the Oracle Healthcare Summit in the US this week. Oracle Healthcare is promising a new #EMR “built from the ground up” to be released in 2025 and embedding #AI across the entire clinical workflow. Seema Verma told the conference that the new platform was not “a refurbished EHR”, saying that “in this day and age, you can’t leverage modern technology by bolting new innovation to something built in the 1990s”. This is spot on and what many in the #digitalhealth community have been saying for some time. We need a #nextgenEMR designed to embed AI across the whole workflow with modern tools for automation, documentation, and tasking that uses conversational AI to navigate and create tasks and documentation, to drive down the #clinicianburnout. 100% agree with her statement: “One of today’s most important and widely used healthcare technologies, the EHR, has not lived up to its promise.''
