  • To Build or Not to Build Workplace EV Charging Stations? Why There’s No Simple Answer

As fleets add more electric vehicles (EVs) to their ranks, businesses face a complex decision: Should they invest in workplace EV charging stations? The answer isn’t straightforward, and multiple factors come into play. The biggest factor, of course, is cost. Installing and maintaining EV chargers can be expensive, especially for businesses with large fleets or many employees driving electric vehicles. Another consideration is the accessibility and convenience for employees. While workplace chargers can provide a reliable charging option during work hours, they may not be the most convenient or cost-effective solution for everyone, particularly for those who can charge at home. Charging at home is often more economical and practical, particularly when solutions like ReimburseEV™ are available, enabling accurate reimbursement for home charging expenses. Encouraging home charging, especially where homeowners can utilize renewable energy sources, can also align more closely with sustainability goals while freeing up on-site chargers for those who really need them.

Ultimately, the article concludes that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Companies need to assess their unique circumstances, employee needs, and long-term sustainability goals to decide whether workplace EV charging stations make sense.

  • Expert: 5 ways residential charging enhances the environmental benefits of EVs

    Energy Capital HTX

In my latest article for Energy Capital, I explore how residential EV charging can significantly boost the environmental advantages of electric vehicles (EVs). While much attention is given to the transition from internal combustion engines to EVs, it is equally crucial to understand how and where we charge these vehicles. Residential charging provides unique opportunities to maximize sustainability efforts, reduce carbon footprints, and support a greener future.

The article outlines these five key benefits of residential charging:

    1. Increased Use of Renewable Energy: Home charging enables EV owners to utilize renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and maximizing clean energy usage.

    2. Optimizing Charging Times for Lower Emissions: Charging during off-peak hours, when demand on the grid is lower and there is a greater mix of renewable energy, helps reduce overall emissions and supports a more sustainable energy grid.

    3. Reducing Dependency on Public Charging Infrastructure: Residential charging decreases the need for public charging stations, easing congestion, reducing infrastructure strain, and promoting a smoother, more efficient charging experience for all EV users.

    4. Avoiding Unnecessary Travel to Public Charging Stations: By charging at home, EV owners can eliminate the need for trips to public charging stations, thereby reducing unnecessary travel, lowering carbon emissions, and saving time.

    5. Enhancing Battery Longevity: Regularly charging at home with controlled power levels can enhance the lifespan of an EV battery, reducing the need for replacements and contributing to environmental sustainability by minimizing waste.

Along with some obvious benefits comes a subtle challenge: Accurately reimbursing employees for their home-charging costs. What at first seems like a simple task can quickly turn into hours of administrative headaches, thanks to America’s complex, diverse utility plans and billing practices. This article runs through some of the common errors that fleet managers make when using flat allowances, regional rates, or averages instead of actual costs. It provides examples of how these methods can cause significant over- and under-reimbursement which can result in driver dissatisfaction and potential class action lawsuits.
