News of Sally Buzbee's departure from The Washington Post is a sign of the volatile times plaguing journalism as the news industry at large continues to search for its saviors. But it's this statistic that led me to let out an audible gasp this morning, "At a town hall last month, Mr. Lewis updated employees on his strategy for reviving the business and revealed the extent of The Post’s financial woes, including that it lost more than $70 million in 2023 and suffered a substantial decline in audience." Other outlets are reporting it more specifically that the newspaper lost $77 million and 50% of its digital audience since 2020. Being late adopters to technology that crumbled its business model is a large part of the problem for legacy news outlets. Add to that the full court press politicians have waged to invalidate journalism as a means to manipulate power. The Post's slogan is "Democracy Dies in Darkness." While this story is about the business and its desperate need for innovation, know that the threat to journalism is a threat to our democracy. Journalism is needed now more than ever before! Still, journalists have to pick their heads up and start looking around both literally and figuratively for their own self preservation. Gone are the days when working harder or keeping a low profile are viable strategies to extend your tenure. If you can't point to ways that you are bringing in revenue, you are expendable from the top to bottom. TV journalists, this applies to you too! That's why I created The Rewrite, a community for journalists and storytellers seeking to reinvent their careers. We're all about providing tools to give you options when... The annual increases are not keeping pace with inflation. Your company has already initiated buyouts and layoffs. The job and its uncertainty are impacting your family. Unhealthy work environments are taking a toll on your mental health. Those are the top reasons why people told us they joined. It's not all about getting out of the business. It's about strategically creating an ecosystem for you to choose what's best for you. We have a brand new initiative that's about to launch in a few weeks. You get our free transferable skills guide when you join!: https://lnkd.in/e6PzNq9G https://lnkd.in/eHPU2XKx

Has Politics Always Been a Reality Show? We are constantly bombarded with the 24/7 drama surrounding the upcoming Presidential election. But is this "reality show" style of politics a new phenomenon, or has it always been this way? I spoke with MSNBC national correspondent and host of The ReidOut, Joy Reid. Her insights were provocative. According to Joy, the allure of fame and celebrity in politics isn't new at all. She shared a fascinating story about Abraham Lincoln, our first Republican President, highlighting how the charisma and public appeal have long been essential in political success. To me, the difference is politics has real consequences. As we engage with this political drama, it's crucial to keep that in mind. What's your take on this? Do you see politics as a reality show? How do you think it impacts our society? Share your thoughts below! #creativecareers #realityshow #marketing #fame #celebrity #politics #media

This is an excellent series by Radio Ambulante Studios and NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. It will be of particular interest to journalists covering politics. Released several months ago, if offers critical context about the Hispanic American electorate that legacy and more contemporary news outlets routinely miss. Perhaps one result of this election is that journalists in those media organizations will finally understand that people of Latin American descent who live in the U.S. are not a homogenous group, and that understanding will be reflected in their stories. When appropriate, it's critical for stories to offer context about the economic and educational characteristics within those groups, as well as the migration patterns of people from Latin America over the last 125 years—and even as far back as far as colonial times. The lived experiences of Cuban American people in South Florida, for example, are very different from those of Mexican American people in Texas, California, and Illinois. Although the episodes are in Spanish, they have English-language transcripts to go with them. #elections #unitedstates #presidentialelection #2024presidentialelection #voter #hispanic #hispanicamerican #latino #latinx #latinamerica #immigration #eleccionespresidenciales #voto #estadosunidos #tendenciaselectorales #hispanos #latinos

Life of a New YouTuber 🥴 I tried to adjust the aperture on my SONY RX VII camera to achieve a beautiful depth-of-field effect in my video. However, upon reviewing the footage later, I realized it was blurry. It was frustrating, but I eventually reshot the footage without the depth-of-field effect and added a Gaussian Blur effect using Adobe Premiere Pro during editing. While the effect wasn't as clean as I wanted, I'm improving using the pen tool. These technical difficulties caused me to miss my weekly post schedule, but I didn't let them discourage me. I still managed to complete the work within the week. This experience taught me not to be too hard on myself when I miss a deadline due to technical difficulties. What's important to me is creating high-quality, well-written, visually appealing content with music that sets the right tone and adds value to my viewers. By doing this consistently, my brand as a YouTuber will only get stronger. #socialmediamarketer #Contentcreator #editor #copywriter #Premierepro 76 Subs and Counting

So, what's next? We can't move forward after this election, or any big change event, without trying to understand what happened (NB: This post is for nonpartisan journalists who have the professional obligation and personal headspace to document the public's values accurately. If that's not you today, that's okay). I found a note in this morning's "The Daily" useful -- "No party has ever retained the White House when so many voters disapprove of the president and think the country is heading in the wrong direction." More here: https://lnkd.in/e5swnDQT People wanted change. Change toward what? Change from what? We can be honest about a candidate's flaws while remaining curious about voters' motivations. What now? The real work begins: Of holding public officials accountable, of analyzing the money, of tracking promises kept or ignored. This would be true of any administration, but it's certainly true of an administration that promised to deliver dramatic change on the economy, immigration and more. I remain hopeful that local media can rise to the moment. We have to be relentlessly accurate, empathetic and creative. We have to be responsive to local readers' skepticism about the media. I have found Joy Mayer's notes from Trusting News useful as I try to remain focused on what my local audience wants and needs. The conservative media landscape in the US is incredibly well-funded, well-connected and well-coordinated, as Taylor Lorenz noted in her newsletter today. The left-wing ecosystem is well-funded and well-connected, but disjointed, and, to my mind, funadementally out of step. I still believe that nonpartisan media can offer an alternative way forward, independent of party and political allegiances, but newsrooms have to truly listen to audiences and answer questions to have any hope of breaking through. I saw Richard Young post this John Dewey quote: “I am inclined to believe that the heart and final guarantee of democracy is in free gatherings of neighbors on the street corner to discuss back and forth what is read in uncensored news of the day, and in gatherings of friends in the living rooms of houses and apartments to converse freely with one another.”

If you're concerned about local news - anywhere - this article about California and the more informed attempts to arrest the incredible decline - 68% of journalists in CA lost since 2004, as well as 25% of newspapers; with total print news circulation down more than 50% - is a good place to start. Clear and precise, taking into account the importance of local news, the need for revenue to support it and ways of doing so that don't pit journalists against the tech platforms that might provide the source of funding: https://lnkd.in/eHjVEviH

Honored to contribute an article to SIE Voices Magazine, published by the Social Impact in Entertainment Society. In a world where content is ubiquitous, the entertainment industry holds a unique power to influence society. Films, television shows, podcasts, and theater productions not only entertain us but often challenge our perspectives, educate us on critical social issues, and inspire us toward action. Media projects have the power to shift culture but, without measuring the social impact of any media projects, we risk losing the opportunity to understand, replicate, and amplify their success. We list four key reasons why measuring social impact in entertainment is crucial. Can you think of any others? #socialimpactinentertainment #media #production #partnersinkind

News organizations play a vital role in our communities, but securing resources for in-depth journalism can be a challenge. My latest Editor & Publisher (E&P) Magazine article explores a creative approach to sponsorship sales: storytelling. At the heart of every strong news organization is a mission: to deliver impactful journalism that serves the community 🗞️. Sponsors can be crucial partners in achieving this goal. They help us amplify our reach and resources, allowing us to tell the stories that matter most. This collaborative approach goes beyond transactions, fostering emotional connections that resonate with both audience and sponsors. By sharing your news organization's journey – the challenges you face and the impact you strive to make – you can cultivate partnerships with a shared purpose. It's at the core of our strength and developing and conveying a compelling story steeped in our mission can transform media sponsorships from transactions to powerful collaborations. This approach strengthens local voices, empowers communities, and ensures the future of impactful journalism. #MediaInnovation #NewsRevenue #Storytelling #CommunityPartnerships #EditorPublisher Gretchen A.
