Going back to our published papers can be an impressive exercise, especially when we realize how we anticipated trends that developed years later. In one of our studies, we mapped word embedding to explicit and neurobiologically motivated semantic features to increase their interpretable power and get away from the “black box” nature of these representations. Our exploration included different types of embeddings, such as factorized count vectors and predict models, as well as contextualized representations. We evaluated the quality of the mapping in a retrieval task and shed light on the semantic features that are better encoded in each embedding type. We also set a large number of probing tasks to assess how the original and the mapped embeddings perform in discriminating semantic categories. Our study is a step forward in understanding which aspects of meaning are captured by vector spaces by proposing a new and simple method to carve human-interpretable semantic representations from distributional vectors. Check out our paper to learn more: Decoding Word Embeddings with Brain-Based Semantic Features

“I think they [brain-computer interfaces] are a kinda neat idea.” – Geoffrey Hinton. Thought-provoking episode on neurotech and brain-computer interfaces by Bloomberg Originals. Alongside insights from neurotech pioneers like Jacob Robinson, Thomas Oxley, and Conor Russomanno, a highlight was hearing Geoffrey Hinton, Nobel laureate and “Godfather of AI,” share his perspective on implantable chips. Interviewer: “Would you put a chip in your brain if you knew it could enhance your neurological functions?” Geoffrey Hinton: “If I knew it could enhance my neurological function and it wouldn’t have any nasty side effects, and there was a very high probability it wouldn’t kill me… yes, I would!” The key challenge? Building capable, less invasive, and safe chips. That’s exactly why MintNeuro exists. – Dorian #neurotech #braincomputerinterfaces #bci #neuralimplants #brainimplants #chips #brainchips #semiconductors

Collective intelligence: A unifying concept for integrating biology across scales and substrates | by Patrick McMillen & Michael Levin | Nature A defining feature of biology is the use of a multiscale architecture, ranging from molecular networks to cells, tissues, organs, whole bodies, and swarms. Crucially however, biology is not only nested structurally, but also functionally: each level is able to solve problems in distinct problem spaces, such as physiological, morphological, and behavioral state space. Percolating adaptive functionality from one level of competent subunits to a higher functional level of organization requires collective dynamics: multiple components must work together to achieve specific outcomes. Here we overview a number of biological examples at different scales which highlight the ability of cellular material to make decisions that implement cooperation toward specific homeodynamic endpoints, and implement collective intelligence by solving problems at the cell, tissue, and whole-organism levels. We explore the hypothesis that collective intelligence is not only the province of groups of animals, and that an important symmetry exists between the behavioral science of swarms and the competencies of cells and other biological systems at different scales. We then briefly outline the implications of this approach, and the possible impact of tools from the field of diverse intelligence for regenerative medicine and synthetic bioengineering. https://lnkd.in/ewMJCtxz #collective #intelligence #biological #systems #multiscale #architecture #biology #unification #regenerative #medicine #synthetic #bioengineering

Did You Know Your Eyes React to What You See? Our latest study, titled "Microsaccade Selectivity as Discriminative Feature for Object Decoding," is available on bioRxiv! In our research, we studied the dynamic world of microsaccades to explore their potential to decode object categories. 🔍 By analyzing microsaccade characteristics in both monkeys and human subjects during a passive viewing task, we discovered specific patterns. These patterns varied across different stimulus categories, such as humans, animals, natural scenes, and man-made objects. 📊 What's even more exciting is that we successfully decoded the stimulus category based on the post-stimulus microsaccade rate distribution with accuracy and recall rate of up to 85%! Checkout the details: https://lnkd.in/ePtqDxdd Thanks to my incredible coauthors for their dedication and expertise in making this research possible: Salar Nouri, Amirali Soltani Tehrani, Niloufar Faridani, and Mohammad-Reza Abolghasemi-Dehaqani #Neuroscience #Microsaccade #ObjectRecognition #Research #BioRxiv #VisualProcessing #paper

I recently chatted with Dan Mapes, founder and president of VERSES, about the new IEEE P2874 draft standard for Spatial Web Protocol, Architecture and Governance. It promises to unify different world representations across the industrial metaverse, digital twins, and enterprise apps. It could also reduce hallucinations and improve the performance of new embodied AI approaches. It's an exciting vision for the future of Embodied AI that seems to add additional value to the many specifications, protocols, and standards in this space that I elaborate on in this article for diginomica: https://lnkd.in/eQPHfZgC

Marlene Cimons' recent The Philadelphia Inquirer article, also shared in The Washington Post, “How AI Could Help Monitor Brain Health,” does an excellent job of illustrating the exciting potential of AI in detecting early signs of cognitive impairment. At Cogwear, we are already bringing this vision to life. Our AI-driven technology analyzes brain wave patterns to provide early indicators of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease using a comfortable, non-invasive wearable device. We would like to build upon this article by highlighting the groundbreaking work happening right here in Philadelphia. Cogwear, in collaboration with Penn and The Penn AI and Tech Collaboratory for Healthy Aging, is pushing the boundaries of what AI and wearable technology can achieve in the early detection of cognitive impairments. And our approach is not just theoretical—we’ve just wrapped up our first human pilot study with our wearable platform. This study is focused on detecting early physiological changes associated with Alzheimer’s, and the preliminary results look very promising. This work is especially urgent as the prevalence of Alzheimer’s is projected to nearly triple by 2060. Early detection can empower individuals and families to make informed decisions about care and treatment, changing the trajectory of how we approach cognitive health. We’re proud to be at the forefront of these advancements, contributing to tools that could redefine brain health for clinicians, researchers, and communities. Let’s shine a spotlight on the innovations taking place in our own backyard and show what’s truly on the horizon for brain health, peace, and performance. https://lnkd.in/gipTHUy4

#Topics Enabling large-scale health studies for the research community – Google Research Blog [ad_1] Posted by Chintan Ghate, Software Engineer, and Diana Mincu, Research Engineer, Google Research As consumer technologies like fitness trackers and mobile phones become more widely used for health-related data collection, so does the opportunity to leverage these data pathways to study and advance our understanding of medical conditions. We have previously touched upon how our work explores the use of this technology within the context of chronic diseases, in particular multiple sclerosis (MS). This effort leverages the FDA MyStudies platform, an open-source platform used to create clinical study apps, that makes it easier for anyone to run their own studies and collect good quality healthcare data, in a trusted and safe way. Today, we describe the setup that we developed by expanding the FDA MyStudies platform and demonstrate how it can be used to set up a digital health study. We also present our exploratory research study created through this platform, called MS Signals, which consists of a symptom tracking app for MS patients. The goal for this app is twofold: 1) to ensure that the enhancements to the FDA MyStudies platform made for a more streamlined study...
