What can you do to make the most of Systems Engineering conferences?
The biggest mistake I made during the first vehicle architecture software design I did was incorporating a non-deterministic TCP/IP buffer into a high priority task on an RTOS for a mission critical system. Software architecture 101 - I had to talk to an architect lead to realize we needed to re-architect the software system to prevent resource leakage over time. You have to network to learn from others with different experiences and perspectives to really make an impact in any type of system engineering role, or really any corporate environment.

Method and apparatus for dynamic vehicle communication response
Issued US 20170302522
A system includes a vehicle processor configured to receive a query, including response network parameters, from a remote entity. The processor is also configured to determine a response transport policy based on the parameters. The processor is further configured to determine if a network having characteristics defined by the policy in conjunction with parameter values is currently connected and utilize the network, if currently available, to transmit a query response, otherwise queue the…

Scripting on a telematics control unit
Issued US 20170269908
Vehicle telematics control units (TCUs) extract data generated in a vehicle, prepare the extracted data for transmission, and then transmit the data over an antenna. Traditional TCUs perform these operations according to instructions generated according to pre-compiled code. Pre-compiled code is difficult to dynamically update and therefore TCU manufacturers must pre-load (i.e., hard code) the full set of TCU software at the time of manufacturing. The term “hard code,” as used in the art, means…

Traditional TCUs perform these operations according to instructions generated according to pre-compiled code. Pre-compiled code is difficult to dynamically update and therefore TCU manufacturers must pre-load (i.e., hard code) the full set of TCU software at the time of manufacturing. The term “hard code,” as used in the art, means embedding the code in the program's source code such that revising the embedded code requires the user to supply new source code. This methodology results in a lossy system that gathers data in a way unsuitable for finding ms resolution of quickly changing vehicle parameters.

Dynamic lane positioning for improved biker safety
Issued US 20170144657
A vehicle includes a steering wheel and a controller. The controller is configured to, in response to receiving location and speed data from other vehicles indicating an expected collision absent a trajectory change, automatically control the steering wheel to direct the vehicle along a collision avoidance path. The collision avoidance path is based on map data identifying a marking type for a traveling lane such that the path crosses the lane when the marking type is broken and does not cross…

Seat belt buckle incorporating a display
Issued US 20160288732
A seat belt buckle for receiving a latch plate of a vehicle seat belt includes a housing having a slot for receiving the latch plate, a locking mechanism within the housing for securing the latch plate within the slot, a display supported by the housing for displaying information and for releasing the latch plate from the locking mechanism when depressed, and a cable connected to a vehicle power source to provide power for the display.

Efficient telematics data upload
Issued US 20170092018
A system includes at least one processor configured to, in response to receiving a VIN from a remote vehicle, transmit to the vehicle a parameter definition selected based on fields of the VIN to configure an ECU of the vehicle to enter a logging mode to capture, aggregate, and send operational data of the vehicle, and a bandwidth configuration file for a modem of the vehicle based on historical throughput requirements associated with operational data.

Vehicle positioning system
Issued US 20170075357
A method including: receiving a synchronization signal and collecting a rolling shutter image of a modulated light on a sensor, determining a primary frequency from the rolling shutter image, and comparing the primary frequency to an expected primary frequency image to determine a directional movement related to a vehicle.

Crowdsourced event reporting and reconstruction
Issued US 20170017734
A crowdsourcing server receives sensor data from vehicles within a vicinity of a location of an event at a time of the event in response to the vehicles being notified of an occurrence of the event. The sensor data includes sensor data of the vehicles sensed at the time of the event. The crowdsourcing server associates the sensor data with the event. The event can be reconstructed using the sensor data associated with the event.

Efficient telematics data upload
Issued US 20160203652
A vehicle electronic control unit (ECU) may control a vehicle subsystem and be configured to receive from a remote server via a vehicle telematics unit (TCU), a parameter definition of a processed parameter to be computed by the ECU; generate the processed parameter according to the parameter definition based on a raw parameter generated by the ECU; and send the processed parameter to a vehicle data buffer associated with the ECU for upload to the remote server via the TCU.
