For those who aren't automotive enthusiasts like ourselves, the aftermarket includes anything you do to maintain or enhance your vehicle outside of the manufacturer dealership. OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer, encompassing brands like Ford, Toyota, and BMW. The digital maturity across this industry is uneven. We’re not only dealing with vast amounts of product and fitment data to ensure you get the right parts, but also with software-driven vehicles generating 1 to 5 million data points per hour. Leveraging this data effectively can transform customer experiences, enabling predictive maintenance and better understanding of part failures. Hybrid vehicles, particularly, present unique challenges. Some parts fail quicker than in traditional vehicles, underscoring the need for robust digital foundations and culture. On-demand features, which allow features already built into vehicles to be unlocked via software for a fee, started as one of the most promising business models in the automotive industry and has now become a focal point of controversy and debate as carmakers received significant pushback from their customer base. Major automotive players such as Tesla, AUDI AG, and BMW Group envisioned on-demand features to revolutionize how consumers interact with their vehicles and positioned it to provide customers with unprecedented flexibility to upgrade their cars over time while creating ongoing revenue streams for carmakers. However, following waves of criticism, BMW announced its decision to abandon this business model last fall. The recent announcement that Audi plans to continue with its subscription-based approach to accessing features like dual-zone climate controls, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams has refueled frustration and disappointment among customers. The #automotive industry is significantly transitioning due to shifting consumer expectations. Vehicles are evolving from being mere utilities to offering connected features, advanced safety, and personalized experiences. This shift has driven #OEMs to rethink their approach to vehicle engineering and revenue channels and led to the emergence of Software-defined Vehicles (#SDVs), where software acts as the vehicle's central control unit, controlling functionalities, analyzing data, and providing an enriched user experience. While OEMs are making strong inroads in capitalizing on the demand drivers and introducing SDV features, developing SDVs is a daunting task faced with challenges such as software development complexity, dynamic regulatory environment, and research and development ramp-up and monetization. All these challenges can lead OEMs to stray away from their course of action, incur cost overruns, and improperly prioritize applications from a monetization standpoint. In this viewpoint, we provide an overview of the North American SDV market and propose a framework that OEMs can utilize to assess their success in navigating these challenges, building SDV competencies, and monetizing their offerings.
