On a sunny day 20 years ago today, about 300 people gathered at the UC Berekely Hass School of Business for a first of its kind conference, BlogOn, an event exploring “the Business of Social Media.” It was Guidewire Group’s first “Vision Conference”, and I, along with my two cofounders Mike Sigal and Frank Kelcz has observed that “blogs, social networks, social software, and syndication techniques [would] converge to create a dynamic and disturptive new market.” We called this convergence social media and promised we “would turn the spotlight on markets as they move from early adopter to rapid growth phases and examine the upside business opportunities such transformation have to offer to those who act judiciously and fast.“ Considering the evolution of social media across two decades, perhaps we didn’t place enough emphasis on “judiciously”. We did host a panel exploring “The Dark Side of Social Media”, citing the “shadows” amid the bright prospects for social media. We discussed the impact on privacy, copyright, intellectual property, online communities, and social interaction. We failed to consider cyberbullying, election engineering, misinformation, or the painful effect of endless doom scrolling on adolescent self esteem and mental health. We acknowledged that social media would disrupt traditional media by spawning an endless stream of new blogs supported by who-knew-what business models. We noted that “blogs, trading communities, and localized search engines are taking audiences and dollars away” from established news media. But we failed to see the near-complete demise of credible local journalism. The first BlogOn Conference came together with the invaluable support of Susan Mernit, Mary Hodder, Ross Mayfield, Shel Israel, Liz Gebhardt, and Alex Williams. These good people rarely get credit for seeing early and catalyzing an emerging field. For as much as we saw a future made richer by social media, we honestly didn’t have a clue who would get richer or what would unfold over the next two decades. BlogOn, we said, was just the beginning of a larger ongoing dialog. “Social media is about the aggregation and amplification of the community voice.” we said.”Social media only works when people engage with the content and with one another.” We didn’t say it outloud, but we firmly placed our trust in that community. Twenty years ago, a community came together to discuss a future that didn’t quite unfold as imagined. The vast majority of companies on the attendee list no longer exist, having been sold, or merged, or simply folded. Collectively, we got a lot right. We missed a lot, too. Twenty years on, the genie is out of the bottle. Yet collectively, we can now pause to reflect and, based on what we have learned, imagine a better and more socially- and culturally-enriching social media.
