Thanks to Cloudinary for inviting me out to California to lead a one-day product storytelling workshop with their marketing/product teams. Shelby Britton and I spoke earlier this year and agreed on the following goal for the day = "To better understand the science of storytelling to deliver more impactful product stories" We split the day into three distinct workshops based on Aristotle's Triangle of Persuasion. ⚙ Logic - Breaking down the buyer's journey to communicate contrast. 💙 Emotion - Deep dive into personas to communicate conflict 🎓 Credibility - Locking down poisoning to communicate credibility. How this designer-founder is taking on $50 Billion tech behemoth tdlr; it's through good questions Karri Saarinen’s contrarian thinking has led to what is already a successful company. They've been profitable for 2+ years, have only spent $35,000 on marketing, and have more money in the bank than they've raised (thank you Lenny's Newsletter for this data) In addition to the success of the business, they also do things differently. They only have one product manager, they don't have OKRs, and they don't do formal design reviews. So how have they come to build such a beloved product? Good questions. When Linear plans for the future, they use figjam sessions to get ideas out on paper and to answer the following questions: 1. What are we uniquely good at right now? 2. What are we bad at? (that we care about?) 3. What are we not doing today that would be game-changing? 4. What should we be paranoid about? why? These are questions that force focus. They enable a ruthless prioritization and a "return to first principles" thinking. They prevent assumptions and question the status quo. Will it be enough to dethrone Atlassian ?

We are trying something new around business development at Setfive. We're proactively pitching prospects ideas that we could build with them. For example, I've been pitching cannabis marketing agencies a tool to automate segmenting past customers. This tool would analyze purchase behavior, hyper-segment past customers, and create targeted messaging to drive additional purchases. So far, I've been pitching this without any deck or collateral. For the most part, it’s been okay, but I've noticed that some people don't immediately "get it." And Depending on how the conversation goes, I sometimes end up going off on tangents which derail the conversation. Would you prefer to be pitched with a deck? Do you think it would help keep the conversation on track?
