Within an already complex media landscape, the convergence of media and commerce is becoming increasingly convoluted. Existing retail media networks are expanding and new ones emerging, which is no surprise given retail media is projected to be a $1.3 trillion industry by 2026 with retailers seeing 50-70% profit margins on retail media platforms -- a stark contrast to their low-margin, slow-growth core businesses. As the scope of retail media networks expand from on-site display and search to include video, social, offsite, and data offerings, new challenges emerge for both retailers and manufacturers: ⚠ Organizational Tensions: With retailers now playing more prominent role in brand building, the retailer-manufacturer relationship involves more stakeholders and reveals potentially conflicting agendas. 💡 Solution: Redesigning organizational structures, processes, and incentives to better coordinate across stakeholders, align agendas, and foster greater collaboration and touchpoints. ⚠ Transparency Issues: As retailers both execute media and report on performance, there's a risk of "grading one's own homework," leading to a lack of visibility into what impressions are bought, the methodologies used to measure success, and the margins earned. 💡 Solution: Developing transparent reporting systems and standardization frameworks, whether through retailers directly or third-party solutions ⚠ Shifts in Bargaining Power: New retail platforms initially depend on large brands to scale, but once they reach critical mass the power dynamic shifts in favor of retailers 💡 Solution: Both retailers and manufacturers need to acknowledge this evolution as platforms mature and focus on differentiation / value creation Staying ahead in this dynamic environment requires agility and collaboration.
