Higher-for-longer rates, along with elevated municipal-bond issuance, may signal that cheaper entry points for muni investors are here for a bit longer. Though reinvestment season is typically a slower time for new issuance, this is an election year, which may mean issuers will want to avoid the uncertainties that come with every election season. Fund flows and rich ratios are concerns, but the asset class' ability to provide low-risk, tax-exempt income remains a key feature, especially if inflation pressures increase. A client asked my colleague Annie Chen about the general expectations for how U.S. presidential elections impact market volume and volatility. To provide insight, Annie analyzed 25 years of data, looking at how S&P, Nasdaq, crude oil, gold, and treasury futures responded in terms of liquidity on election night, the next day, and over the following month. New story for Reorg w/ my colleague Paola Aurisicchio - private lenders including Ares are expected to beat out banks in providing $3.2bn in debt financing for the potential buyout of edtech company PowerSchool, according to sources, with pricing set to be around SOFR+500 bps. PowerSchool’s deal comes as a potential win for private credit lenders as the primary BSL market has been very active in May. A bunch of people have asked me about the LSTA/Deal Catalyst conference which took place last week in Florida. One of the better panels was on Liquidity in Private Credit: Secondary Market Trading and Secondary Funds. That's where Strategic Liquidity Fund Acquisitions, SLFAQ, LLC comes in! We are secondary buyers of private loans that are distressed. While this wasn't the focus of this panel, they did address secondary trading in the private loans.
