Maybe you shouldn’t hire a CRO agency. If you relate to any of the following reasons, think wisely. I mean this genuinely. You can’t just ‘do’ CRO. You have to be ready for it. 1. You don’t have the resources to execute. If you can’t implement winning tests, then your project is doomed to fail. Frequent causes are either the lack of an internal dev, no access to outside dev resources, inflexible CMS, or a website that is owned and managed separately. Any decent CRO agency will also run a lot of research. You need to be able to install tools, and you ideally need a customer base we can email for surveys, interviews and usability studies. 2. You can’t measure success. We need a solid foundation of web analytics. You also need a decent history so we can compare QoQ and YoY results. More than that, you need clear 12 month business goals, and we need to be able to track how we pace on them every quarter. We’ve found a standard project has about 90 days to prove ROI before stakeholders start looking at alternative ways to turn that budget from spend to investment. 3. You don’t have time to dedicate to a chunky project. Some CRO agencies ask you to provide test plans. At my experience level, project about 2 to 3 hours between general research tasks + punctual test plan & brief creation. This is sizable. Other firms like CA will take care of test plans, but don’t think it’s a hands off experience for you either. There’s feedback to provide on test hypotheses, designs, etc. Without a doubt, a lot of internal communications need to happen. You will be on point to inform your team of the upcoming tests, report on results, educate on the discipline, and manage a lot of stakeholder interactions. If you can’t dedicate time to improve the website and customer journey, then maybe now isn’t the right time. 4. You get hung up on every tactical detail. I am not going to sugar coat this. CRO is about tracking more accurately what works on the website and what doesn’t. Most tests are displayed to 50% of traffic and 3 to 4 weeks at most. We will favor imperfect deployments, because 90% and 95% solutions will provide all the feedback we need to decide what to implement on prod. But if you get hung up on every single detail, imperfect pixel and slightly off color, then testing is not for you. Testing is meant to create low cost proofs of concept so that you only invest big into what is proven to work.

A bad introduction can kill your content. Bad introductions don’t match users’ search intent. Writing a blog post on what a CMS is? Explain what it is and what it does. Users searching for this need basic information. Comparing two CMS platforms? Users interested in comparisons are already knowledgeable. Their intent is commercial, and they don’t need generic explanations. Mixing these up? You lose your audience, increase bounce rates, and hurt your SEO. Generic introductions might feel easy, but they harm your content.

RIA growth is being stolen. And the culprits are using RIA dollars to do it. (It's called marketing arbitrage, and it's real) BUT... ...the solution has been under your noses the entire time. You've got to think about the marketing portfolio... ...and especially the digital marketing portfolio... ...like a portfolio manager. The similarities are uncanny. Instead of →stocks →bonds →alts You've got →Paid media →Earned media →Shared media →Owned media And instead of just asset allocation →You have asset and activities BUT Just like each asset in a portfolio has its own risk profile and performance characteristics... ...so to do your digital marketing assets and activities. Some are stable. Some can qualify. Some build trust. Some are volatile. Some can presuade. Some can book meetings. Some generate awareness. But there is no single asset or activity that can do it all. You need a MIX. And that mix needs to be balanced and diversified JUST RIGHT. And right now, for RIA writ large it's not. And its one of the biggest factors behind RIA organic growth trending in the wrong direction. When analyzing the internal linking on your website, do NOT count links that are in your navigation (menus) or related posts. By filtering these out, you'll be a lot closer to seeing how many quality contextual internal links your pages have. Would say you need a bare minimum of two per page, but I like to aim for five or more. This stuff can have massive effects on your rankings... don't sleep on it.
