Dawning Days of DRM Chapter 2 Blu-ray      Episode 1  Format War (3) Concurrently, huge efforts were made to obtain support from such companies as The Walt Disney Company (“Disney”), Universal, Warner Bros. (“Warner”), Fuji Film, Maxell, Technicolor, Apple, Intel, and Microsoft. Mostly, BD-3C with Dell and HP played a major role including top executives. I also acted as liaison especially with major Hollywood studios. Each of those targeted had a glamorous wish list for the support, which was made use of negotiation tactics still in absence of a clear winner of the format war. Likewise, most of them had not made exclusive business commitment to any format. Gradually, however, power balance was shifted in favor of Blu-ray by major addition to its Board of Directors - Disney in December 2004, Apple in March 2005, and Warner in October 2005. The first movie titles for HD-DVD were released in the U.S on April 18, 2006. Meanwhile, the first Blu-ray Disc titles were released on June 20, 2006, and the first movies using dual layer Blu-ray discs (50 GB) were introduced in October 2006. HD DVD had titles from Universal, Paramount, and Warner, while Blu-ray Disc started out with those from Sony Pictures, Disney, and Fox. After a while, however, Warner and Paramount added titles for a Blu-ray catalog. Finally, on January 4, 2008, Warner, which had the largest market share of DVD movies at that time, announced plans to drop HD DVD support completely starting June 2008. Regarding retailers, in June 2007, Blockbuster, at the time the largest U.S. movie rental company, moved to Blu-ray exclusively in 1450 stores because their survey at their 250 stores revealed that more than 70% of high-definition rentals were Blu-ray discs. In July 2007, Target Corporation began carrying only Blu-ray standalone players in its stores, featuring Blu-ray movie titles from Sony and Disney. Likewise, Walmart, the largest DVD retailer in the U.S. at that time, made it public on February 15, 2008, to phase out HD DVD completely by June 2008. The tide completely turned against Toshiba, which launched the first HD DVD player on March 31, 2006. It was February 19, 2008, when Toshiba finally announced to discontinue HD-DVD business. It was viewed that the decision by Warner about a month before ultimately triggered that announcement.

Will Nasdaq try and kick the can with $SMCI to help $NVDA, or will it suspend trading in SMCI and delist the company this week? After EY quit as Super Micro's auditor, and questioned the company's integrity, who at Nasdaq is going to put their job on the line to appease SMCI executives, its partner companies and the financial media? Dario: "If they had an auditor, if EY was still in place there could've had been a chance to get an extension, but they don't even have an auditor. It's totally fair the trading on the shares is being suspended. If they didn't do anything wrong, they will go back to being listed again, but if you look at the rules, there is no chance they can be on board with that... and if they do they actually put themselves at risk of being conspirators on efforts to commit securities fraud if the situation in the future evolves and bad things about SMCI surface and are confirmed..." ...."So overall, SMCI has 2.1 billion in cash and 2.3 billion in debt. Let's Gooooo! We just need the FBI to join the party like the good old days! "Sony Music Group (SMG) is in the process of sending out letters to what MBW understands to be 700 AI developers and music streaming services, declaring that it is “opting out” of having its content used in the training of AI. Also, any AI developer who wants to use SMG’s content will need explicit permission. The letter, obtained by MBW, also states that these companies may have already violated Sony Music’s copyrights. “Due to the nature of your operations and published information about your AI systems, we have reason to believe that you and/or your affiliates may already have made unauthorized uses (including TDM [text and data mining]) of SMG Content in relation to the training, development or commercialization of AI systems,” states the letter. The letter goes on to ask the companies in question “to undertake that neither you nor any of your affiliates have made any such unauthorized uses,” or to provide information on any SMG-owned content used “to train, develop or commercialize any of your AI systems,” and a “description of the manner in which such SMG Content was accessed and/or reproduced and/or extracted by you or your affiliates or any third party contracted to do so on your behalf.”"

Dawning Days of DRM Chapter 2 Blu-ray      Episode 1  Format War (1)   Success of DVD paved the way for a High-Definition (“HD”) optical disc format with more capacity for storage. Though DVD can store 4.7GB of data on a single side (8.5 for a dual layer DVD), a 1080p HD quality 2-hour movie title requires about 6 GB in file size. Additionally, HDTV televisions were introduced to the market in late 1990s. Accordingly, usual suspects in optical media business were trying hard to develop the next generation of DVD. However, there were differences of opinion among such developers, especially in terms of cost and quality of consumer products to be marketed. In April 2002, DVD Forum declared to pursue its own high-definition solution. In August in the same year, Toshiba and NEC, who prioritized cost, announced Advanced Optical Disc, which is renamed HD-DVD in the following year. On Sept. 27, 2004, Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Memory-Tech Corporation started HD DVD Promotion Group, which was joined by Intel and Microsoft, among others. In addition, Time Warner (currently WarnerMedia) was believed to strongly support HD DVD. While HD DVDs can store up to 15GB on a single layer, some developers viewed that is too small and challenged for an optical disc format capable of holding 25GB on a single layer. They were MEI, Philips, and Sony, (“BD-3C”) which established the Blu-ray Disc Foundation (“BDF”) on May 20, 2002, with Hitachi, LG, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp and Thomson. Their efforts of reaching out to major PC manufactures resulted in teaming up with Dell, Inc. (“Dell”) and Hewlett-Packard (“HP”) which had just acquired Compaq Computer Corp. (“Compaq”). Dell, HP, and Compaq enjoyed about one third of global PC market at that time. I was assigned to take care of legal aspects of Blu-ray disc format creating activities, in addition to DRM, and was involved with finalizing legal arrangements such as the Charter, equivalent to Bylaws of a corporation, for both BDF and BDA, as well as Blu-ray disc format and logo license agreements until early 2005. By the way, “Blu-ray” was named after blue lasers but is not spelled “Blue-ray” to eliminate risk of intentionally misusing the name for the other similar applications. We learned a lesson from DVD that use of DVD for +R and +RW formats, which were not developed at the DVD Forum, was not preventable because DVD was ruled as a generic term.   Given number of key participants from various industries, consensus making required considerable time and endeavor. It became a regular procedure to form a consensus in various propositions amongst the BD-3C first, then to get such a consensus supported by Dell and HP before introduction to the original 9 BDF members. This procedure applied to legal topics as well.

There are a myriad of cheap and plastic styluses that ship for free with most e-readers and e-notebooks from companies such as Onyx Boox, Meebook, Hyread, Readmoo and other Chinese companies. The Amazon Kindle Scribe, Kobo, Remarkable 2, and SuperNote all have a line of basic styluses with limited functionality. If you want to spend way more money, they also have a line of premium styluses with expanded features such as tilt recognition and erasers. Some have no charging capability, while others do. There is also a complete line of 3rd party styluses made of wood, aluminum and higher-grade materials compatible with most e-notes on the market. With all of these choices of digital stationery, why don’t they support internals capable of receiving firmware updates for expanded functionality?

Audio Educators - some of you may be aware that I co-authored a book with Eric Kuehnl on multichannel audio and Immersive Audio, specifically Dolby Atmos. This book includes exercises, tests, quizzes, practice assignments, sample projects, and all the written material. We understand the challenge textbooks can be for students, so we decided to not publish a textbook at this time, but instead port everything over to a Canvas LMS course shell. This allows educators to be able to have all of the course/book content available to all of their students within Canvas immediately. Additionally, this allows educators to modify, change, add, re-organize all the content for their course if they desire. One could also just pick the key items they would like to use, truly trying to make this as flexible and accessible to both help educators in the classroom, while making this as accessible as possible to students without the challenge of acquiring additional course texts. We have already had Universities purchase and implement this material this past year, and as we turn our attention back to our courses and campus for a new semester - I thought I’d re-share this. Plugging Along with Seven Countries Testing 3.0. Recently, ATSC members, Sinclair Inc., along with the Pearl TV consortium, hosted an ATSC 3.0 device interoperability test at the ONE Media Technologies lab. This interop event was focused on NextGen TV elements such as digital rights management and signing in connection with MMT (MPEG Media Transport) and ROUTE (Real-time Object delivery over Unidirectional Transport), the Advanced Emergency Information broadcaster application, as well as basic interoperability testing of new models from TV set manufacturers. The testing sessions involved most of the major hardware and software players in the field of NextGen TV—some two dozen—including encoder technology providers, emergency alerting gear, test equipment and receiver manufacturers. In addition to providing the facility, Sinclair also distributed ATSC 3.0 off-air signals from Baltimore broadcasters to provide a real-world environment. More than 60 participants traveled from seven countries to participate in the June 3-7 ATSC 3.0 ‘Interop’ testing event. Customer feedback and reception have been overwhelmingly positive since we launched our Gen-IC Cloud Intercom service at the start of the year. Transitioning production workflows from on-premises to cloud-based tools is not always smooth, and getting crews and personnel fluent with new systems can come with many teething challenges. However, one of the main pieces of customer feedback we get is how intuitive Gen-IC is to use especially with the self-serve SkyPort portal. Moreover, the users of the system continue to work with the same virtual clients or physical panels (hybrid systems) that they have come to love for many years. This results in much lower deployment costs as no user training is required. Gen-IC is our first product venture into managed cloud services, and it’s hugely rewarding to hear that it is enabling our customers to save time and money, making productions as efficient as possible.
