If your packaging reps quote without asking for details, digging into the customer’s needs, or securing any kind of commitment, they’re not selling—they’re giving away 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆’𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲. Plastics work, have worked, and will continue to work. Recycling does work and will work, but it needs to become a staple in how we do things, not just some sporadic, half-hearted effort that people undertake occasionally. The world is full of “me too” and “follow the leader” types—is that you? If so, welcome to the world of what we call a “hot dog salesman”—you can make a hard living selling hot dogs...and you’ll need to sell an awful lot of hot dogs to eke out a living. Or, you can be aware of the options available to offer your customers, including using alternative packaging materials—and yes, plastic if the situation warrants it. Moreover, if you can then partner to help guide and inform them of the “truth” in eco-friendly packaging, I assure you, you will stand out. You may often stand alone, but you’ll become much more than a hot dog salesman—and break into the world of higher margins and true partnership while turning into a “steak and lobster” salesperson.
