What you say isn’t as important as what is heard.

Let us explain what we mean by way of example. Let us explain what we mean by way of example. The partners of a real estate boutique, nearly evenly split with 16 women and 14 men, gather for an urgent meeting called by their chairman, a respected men- tor to many of them and a pillar of the commercial real estate community. Suffice it to say, after a storied career, he knows how to close a deal. But today he’s haggard after a week of plane rides. He stands at the head of the conference table and proceeds to explain the details of a proposed merger with a competing firm. He’s done this before over the years and, perhaps feeling somewhat entitled, he keeps his case for the merger short, laying out only the bare facts that support the union, focusing on the large salary increases the partners could expect to receive. When he’s done, he gruffly brushes off a few cursory questions and calls for an immediate vote.

He loses. And you might be able to guess why.

It’s ba-ack! After years in recession-inspired doldrums, the market for laterals has been gaining consistent steam in recent years. The economy may still be struggling, but at least one index is on the rise: law firm mergers. Given today’s heightened merger activity, as well as the increase in mass lateral moves, it’s important that firms understand the unique communications challenges—and opportunities—that come with large-scale movement of talent. Fortunately, this is where John Hellerman steps in.

In a new Thomson Reuters article published, John provides detailed insight for law firms to follow in order to achieve merger success. John explains that mergers and large lateral moves provide firms with opportunities to strengthen their reputations. Seizing that opportunity, however, requires the execution of a strategic communications plan.

John’s article lays out a detailed blueprint for such communications plans. It has two phases – the initial announcement process and the long-term public relations plan – and requires a focus on both internal and external audiences for an effective transition to occur.

According to John, the primary focus of the first phase is to identify representative spokespeople and develop key message points for media outreach efforts. John emphasizes that internal communication is crucial during this initial announcement phase, as internal constituencies must buy in to any merger or lateral move before the announcement is publicized. During the second phase, the firm should identify key partners and practice areas to promote, and develop specific strategies for those groups to follow over the following six to nine months.

Mergers and large lateral moves are vitally important to firms’ future success, and present significant challenges in light of the multiple layers of communication involved. We recommend John’s article for any firms or lateral groups that want to make the most of their big moves.
