Some more thoughts from the IBM event in NY this past week. It was clear that the efforts to bring 160,000 consultants up to speed to evolve IBM's $2B book of business is a high priority. It is being executed broadly to take advantage of an expanding TAM as AI's impact is felt across industries around the world. IBM is already seeing that costs are top of mind among its customers and prospects, as Shawn Rogers and I found in our recent primary research conducted for BARC(https://lnkd.in/gy_zS9TZ). There was much discussion of IBM's Granite models (https://lnkd.in/gszuu7AF). It was an eye-opener for me personally to see how much benchmarking and effort have gone into creating deliverables that are not falling prey to what seems to be a common belief that more is always better - demonstrating that smaller, more targeted models can outperform at a lower cost. Eileen Lowry talked about the compelling new offerings in IBM Consulting Advantage, a platform that will enhance productivity for developers and users alike. A strong focus on usability and delivery will serve IBM well, leveraging the reliance its customers have leaned into for decades on the company's trustworthiness. Rob Thomas and Dario Gil highlighted trends to come, such as multi-agent orchestration, speculative decoding, more and more open source, and the impact of using more than the 1% of enterprise data that is typically represented in foundation models. Data at the heart of it all was a recurring theme, and I could not be happier to hear this ringing affirmation. Although Arvind Krishna made it clear he sees Quantum as one of IBM's 3 largest growth areas by percentage over the next few years, he also asserted, in response to a provocative question from Sanjeev Mohan, that those who know IBM "do not have the impression anymore" that IBM is a legacy vendor. It's a tribute to his leadership that heads nodded around the room when he said so. IBM is adding clients in the thousands year over year, he said. There is so much more I could talk about but I will close with one of my favorite pieces of phrasemaking: the reference to IBM's zTPS as "the OG Platform." IBM continues to embrace its mainframe legacy, as it should. The z platform embodies the distinction between "technical debt" and "technology asset."

What’s next, a DevOps vendor? Salesforce is on in buying spree, which totally makes sense when you have a large captive sales channel. Given the operational complexity of having Salesforce as one of the largest application in an enterprise, the*Ops space is where interesting opportunities will appear. DevOps AI/ML Ops RevOps etc. Just speculating here, but if the DevOps usual suspects were public company, I would probably put money on them - notably, Copado, Gearset and Autorabit. Ian Mercer with an excellent perspective that is providing a lot of impetus for CockroachDB with enterprise customers. Building CockroachDB over the past 10 years – and advancing the concept of distributed SQL as a credible successor to venerable monolithic database architectures – has not been easy! But tackling the problem of modernizing legacy data architectures for businesses which have organically grown these mission-critical use cases over decades, typically employing COBOL and mainframes...well it's like climbing the Mount Everest of business technology transformations. Like summiting the world's tallest peak, it requires a well-coordinated and intensive team effort between global system integrators, the hyperscaled cloud vendors, and ISVs like mLogica and Cockroach Labs. It's clearly a goal worth pursuing, and we see that every day in the impressive array of businesses who express their enthusiasm. It is often the case that generational businesses are built by tackling problems so difficult that competitors focus on easier targets, and I believe modernizing critical use cases with decades of history is just such an example.

This exchange with Jeffries analyst Samad Samana is a master class in modern GTM. Watch/listen to it below. #New Salesforce White Paper Tackles LLM Security Risks 💡#Salesforce perspective: “As generative AI and its many capabilities rapidly evolve, it’s crucial for organizations to stay ahead of potential security risks that the deployment of LLMs can bring to the forefront. With more than a decade of expertise in AI, and with trust as our number one value, Salesforce has both the expertise and commitment to provide our customers, partners, and the entire ecosystem with the tools and resources needed to navigate the changing landscape and mitigate risks. #The Salesforce white paper outlines some of the most pressing emerging threats to LLMs and how organizations can protect themselves: 💡#Prompt injections: Bad actors can manipulate an LLM through malicious insertions within prompts and cause the LLM to act as a “confused deputy” for the attacker. Safeguarding against these threats involves a two-pronged strategy – using machine learning defense strategies to intelligently detect and prevent malicious insertions, and using heuristic, learning-based strategies to safeguard against potential threats to prompts, such as deny list-based filtering and instruction defense. 💡#Training data poisoning: Attackers can manipulate training data or fine-tuning procedures of an LLM. Companies can protect against this by checking that training data inputted does not contain poisoned information, such as malicious code payloads, which could compromise the model’s security and effectiveness, or lead to privacy violations and other security breaches. 💡#Supply chain vulnerabilities: Vulnerabilities can affect the entire application lifestyle, including traditional third-party libraries/packages, docker containers, base images, and service suppliers. Organizations can guard against these by ensuring that every part of the lifestyle meets the company’s established security standards. And, they must ensure all components pass the company’s internal security review process before they are incorporated into products. 💡#Model theft: Only authenticated and authorized clients should be able to access a company’s LLM. This prevents actors from compromising, physically stealing, and copying proprietary models. Businesses can also adopt measures such as requiring Just in Time (JIT) credentials, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), strong audit trails, and logging to prevent model theft. 💡#Safe training grounds: Companies should hold the training environments — controlled settings where AI systems can learn and improve their capabilities — to the same security standards as the data environment itself.
