As a high performing USMC veteran, the worst habit I had to unlearn was How to stop using my brain. ⬇️ As veterans, we are taught to obey orders. To turn off that protesting part of our brains and say, “Aye aye ma’am/sir.” Even when we know better. Even when there’s clearly a more efficient, alternative solution. As high performers, we’re also expert b***sh***ers!! We can work any room. Relate to just about anyone. We pride ourselves on our logical, analytical skills. It’s how we became successful. In fact, we’re SO good at accommodating other people that we start to lose sight of What we actually want. What our needs are. In short, we completely ignore our gut The part of us that is screaming -not to take that meeting -not to go to that networking event -not to stay in that job -not to take that client We rationalize and we justify all the why reasons we “should” Without listening to that inner wisdom that knows best. ➡️ Because we’ve been trained to ignore it for the sake of the “mission.” ➡️ For the sake of “good order and discipline.” Your brain will sabotage you at least 50% of the time. VETERANS | TRANSITIONING MILITARY | LOVING YOUR WORK I recently attended a networking dinner designed to introduce transitioning military members with military friendly companies. The emcee of the event was an exceptional and polished presenter (a MARSOC Veteran who had departed the military five years prior). I introduced myself to him and asked him how he was doing professionally: "How is it going with your current job", I inquired. "It's going great! I'm making more money than I ever have in my life," he replied. "But are you happy", I asked. He smiled, paused, and said "No, I am not. I do not feel fulfilled." One of the biggest challenges for transitioning military members is finding fulfilling work after their service. In the military, we experience a deep sense of purpose and camaraderie, making it more than just a job—it’s a higher calling. This becomes our new standard, and we seek similar fulfillment in our next career. We are drawn to meaningful work that goes beyond money, contributing to something greater than ourselves. High camaraderie in teams is crucial for our fulfillment in the work we do. Employers, if you’re facing barriers to hiring from the military community, it’s time to get more intentional about your recruiting process. Recruiters can sometimes face challenges getting buy-in when matching military community members with civilian roles. And it’s often because the hiring manager doesn’t have a complete understanding of the value those candidates can contribute. If you’re an employer looking to tap the military community’s talent pipeline, it’s important to align with your hiring team on the front end. It can be as simple as: 1. Developing a shared understanding of how military community candidates can bring value to the team – even if the skillset you’re seeking isn’t spelled out plainly on their resumes. 2. Identifying clear pathways that are successful for military community candidates and establishing goals with your hiring team at the start of the recruitment process There’s a wealth of talent in the military community. To tap into it, make sure everyone on your team understands the purpose of recruiting military community job seekers and the best career pathways for them to thrive.

#realtalk for my fellow veterans that are transitioning on LinkedIn...and frankly as a reminder of something we have always known. Be careful who you hitch your trailer to on this platform. Hitching it to the wrong person, team etc will have detrimental effects to you. I have seen it happen. There are true clowns out there that are capitalizing on a vulnerable time in your life--the transition. I am no one special on this platform but I do help veterans and their spouses find and get jobs. It is something I enjoy doing and I make no money off of it at all. It is my way of giving back to the people I served with and to my service--the Army. My satisfaction is someone messaging me back and thanking me for helping them land their job or provide them some insight--in a respectful manner. Here is how I operate with connection requests and general conversation. 1. When I get a connection request the first thing I look for is a note in the request. Now, I am not like some on here that will just say, "Nope". I have accepted and sent connection requests without a note. However, there are those with heads in the sky that will not do it. My opinion, don't connect with them anyways. 2. If I see a connection request with a note I of course read it to see if it is spam. If spam it is gone. 3. If not spam I read the note and then look to see what we have in common--starting with our mutual or their connections. Here is where it gets tricky and it is only what I DO. There are certain people in the veteran "helping" population that I want no part of for very obvious reasons and most know who they are. If you are connected with them I will not accept. That does not mean I will not have a conversation with you but not accepting the request as I do not want their gibberish showing up on my page. Side note--I am slowly going through my connections and removing folks that have these mutual connections that I do not respect nor want a part of. No offense to anyone ( I also remove anyone that posts anything political as well). Just house cleaning. When I do decide to remove a connection I do look at how much we have interacted since we have been connected. It makes it a lot easier when the last time we chatted was when we connected--four years ago. 4. Once we connect I will reach out to you and see how I can help or what can we do next other than connection. It is a networking site. Again, I am no one special but manage my connections based on what I want to see in my feed.

Many people are unaware that I took advantage of Army Tuition Assistance to acquire certifications that I believed would benefit my future entrepreneurial endeavors after leaving the military. Among all the certification courses I've taken, this one was by far the most challenging. In fact, I would prefer going through a Juris Doctor or PhD program rather than repeating this experience. Given my interest in Web Development, it was necessary for me to take this course, which cost $4,500. Failing to pass would have resulted in me having to repay the Army. Moreover, I had a promising opportunity lined up with EraSolutions, directly from the CEO who happened to be a retired Army Recruiter and a self-made millionaire. He intended for me to be the West Coast enrollment liaison for his GSA approved course and CSP Skills Program. However, I lost my motivation and realized that it didn't align with my personal goals and true passions. Front-end Developers with JavaScript skills can earn an average salary ranging from $60,000 to $110,000 per year, depending on their experience and location. JavaScript Developers, on the other hand, can earn an average salary ranging from $70,000 to $125,000 per year, depending on their experience, location, and the complexity of the projects they work on. Full-stack Developers with expertise in both front-end and back-end development, including JavaScript, can earn salaries ranging from $80,000 to $150,000 per year. However, with the rise of AI, I believe that these professions may eventually become obsolete. Nonetheless, it's still impressive to have these skills in my repertoire. 😎
