Here is an excerpt from Golden Gate Mothers Group ‘s most recent April/May magazine “Craze”, featuring a mention of Custom Fit! Sasha Fahimi writes, “I became curious and sought out [evidence based precision medicine] resources in San Francisco. When I met Evan Mather, founder of Custom Fit, a local gym that offers personal training and individualized nutrition coaching, I realized Jahan was not alone in his quest to improve his health by using data. Evan is a believer in DEXA and VO2 max testing, describing them as “two highly researched body composition and cardiorespiratory analysis tools that allow us to assess a client’s baseline, guide recommendations, and build the most personalized plan one can ask for.” DEXA is an incredibly precise measure of body composition, helping measure bone density, lean muscle mass, and body fat, including the proportion of visceral fat— the fat on the inside that you can’t see-which is especially harmful to internal organs and is associated with development of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. While users of Ozempic will see a reduction in their visceral fat (likely driving much of the health benefits), doctors warn that a significant amount of the overall weight loss can come at the cost of lean muscle mass, an unintended consequence that can be tracked by DEXA and reversed with appropriate training and diet interventions. VO2 max, on the other hand, measures your cardiac and respiratory fitness. Evan describes it as assessing “how much oxygen (V = volume) you’re able to uptake under maximum effort, and as well as help determine your different heart rate zones for training.” While the idea of running full speed on an incline on a treadmill until I’m maxed out sounds terrible, it turns out your VO2 max actually may predict how long you live. “VO2 max declines gradually with age, and people with higher VO2 max have better heart and lung health and, on average, live longer and more independently,” my husband explained … When I went in for my own DEXA scan, I noticed that Custom Fit was much more than your average gym. a16z Bio + Health doubles down on healthcare and invests in Function Health In 2022 Andersen Horowitz made the decision to dive into healthcare - because they believe that the biggest company in the world will be a consumer health tech company. This year, A16Z invested in Function Health as the lead in its Series A.  Since launching its beta in 2023, Function Health has amassed 50,000 members - with no marketing.  It boasts a strong founding team, that including Dr. Mark Hyman Ed.D. as its Chief Medical Officer.  Earlier this year, Function announced its partnership with Equinox.  It has raised a total of $53M. A16Z’s investment in Function might come as a surprise to some but it has made no secret of its bet in tackling consumer healthcare. The US Healthcare industry is massive ($4 trillion USD and 20% of GDP) - which is why A16Z, along with every large tech company (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon) are moving towards it.  They are also moving towards it because the current largest healthcare company in the world is not a tech company and does a poor job in consumer engagement.  UnitedHealth Group (UHG) is the 19th largest company in the world and the largest healthcare company with a market cap of $450B (not including Eli Lilly and Company and Novo Nordisk).  UHG by all metrics is technically a consumer company with half of its sales being DTC - yet their consumer engagement is extremely poor with a NPS of 4. A consumer health company’s core competency should be their ability to engage and retain patients - something that most healthcare companies have failed to do historically. The healthcare industry is ripe for a consumer-obsessed, healthcare-native tech company that will reimagine what care can look like.  A consumer health company will win by placing consumers first, while still taking into account the realities of payor and provider incentives. As per A16Z, “Function started a movement and has fundamentally changed consumer behavior. ..it’s a preventative, lifelong approach to health, not just a single event or doctor’s visit. It’s a new routine that enables people to catch health issues early and benefit from AI advancements. Traditional healthcare treats symptoms; Function finds root causes.” - all for $499 / year. 🧑‍🔬Interesting new study out of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), shows risk of AFib is 3 times more common than previously thought - affecting 10.5M adults in America (or 5% of the population). 🏥 The increase is heavily influenced by lifestyle choices that produce chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, sleep apnea and other medical problems that can lead to more likely developing AFib. ⌚️Luckily, consumer wearables devices are increasingly able to proactively identify heart conditions like AFIb in order to help identify preventative health actions. Does it Matter if Men Lead Femtech Companies? The Femtech industry encompassing innovations in women’s health, menstrual health, menopause, fertility, and beyondis growing at a remarkable rate. With billions in potential market value, it’s no surprise that investment is pouring in. Interestingly, a notable number of these well-funded companies are led by men. Does this matter? Yes, and no. Let’s unpack the question. On one hand, these male founders likely see the immense revenue potential. Femtech has long been underserved, and the sheer number of women seeking solutions for specific health needs offers significant financial opportunity. In a market with untapped demand, business-savvy individuals can sense the possibilities. But there may be another factor at play: access to financial backing. We’ve all heard about the challenges women founders face in securing investment. Statistically, men are often able to attract larger funding rounds, perhaps due to existing networks or the perception of “familiarity” in the boardroom. For many investors, a business pitch from a male founder might consciously or not feel more relatable, contributing to funding disparities. Yet, the question lingers, can someone truly understand the complexities of menopause or period health if they haven’t lived it? As women in the industry, many of us know that empathy, shared experiences, and understanding of women’s unique health challenges often shape better, more impactful solutions. Male-led Femtech companies might sometimes lack that intuitive insight. However, when they build strong teams with the right expertise and lived experience, they can still contribute positively to the space. Ultimately, it’s not about excluding anyone but about ensuring diverse leadership and voices. Women’s health deserves leaders who are deeply invested in the outcomes, and those voices can come from any gender. That said, there’s no substitute for empathy and firsthand understanding in shaping the future of Femtech with products that resonate genuinely. Would it be beneficial if more women led these companies? Absolutely. But while we advocate for balanced representation, we must recognize that any investment and innovation in women’s health is a step in the right direction. The key is creating a space where everyone, especially women, can lead, innovate, and access funding on a level playing field. Personally of course I’m really routing for female led. Let’s give them all a chance to shine through investment. I’m not surprised, but it’s fantastic how we went from a full on 🆘 bankruptcy alert in Q2 to now getting our projections back on track. We haven’t even gone to market yet and yet we’re already creating value. Admittedly, we made $50 over the weekend, and the workflow it took to create that value is incredibly unsustainable and slow. Sora AI just launched... I wanted to share my first text to video creation here, but as you can see, others beat me to it. In the words of The Californians (from SNL) - it's jammed! Until I can test drive it, here's some info: 1. Sora is a text-to-video service from OpenAI (ChatGPT folks). 2. You can also create videos from your images. 3. The videos are short: Up to 20 seconds 4. It's available to anyone - not just paid plans - from the Explore Feed. 5. ChatGPT Plus subscribers get up to 50 video generations per month at 720p resolution, with each video capped at five seconds. ChatGPT Pro subscribers get more 6. "There’s endless meaning to be found in the world." - Hassan Aleem, Ph.D. This is one of my favorite episodes of the Stamina Lab podcast where I chatted with Hassan about how beauty influences our perception, health, and well-being. During this episode, we talk about how our brain uses what we find as beautiful to give us an approach signal to learn more, basically driving our attention. Someone broke down the estimated costs of a $15 Sweetgreen salad. We need these cost graphics for digital health to help future founders. Especially for tech enabled cos, the greatest cost is labor. Much of the "value created" is in curation and matching, which means the gross margins are reliant on labor arbitrage. Pay someone $X, but get paid $X+Y% per visit. The challenge with healthcare is that you often have to pick one of two business models: 1. specialized, low volume, high cost, low gross margin % 2. generalized, high volume, low cost, high gross margin % I'd argue founders should focus on gross dollars over the lifetime of the customer (like Jeff Bezos said) instead of gross margin %'s, but we'll leave that for another time. The challenge is that many tech enabled digital health cos have high cost of goods sold (labor) and moderately high product, design, and engineering budgets. We must build differentiated solutions for patients, clinicians, and clients to be out incumbents, however, we're realizing that companies are ultimately valued on the discounted value of future cash flows. And the high SG&A costs at most organizations might be inbalanced to the unit economics of the business. I'm not sure the math pencils out for everyone unfortunately. But I'm just a guy on the internet, would love to hear the thoughts from those smarter than I (you!). Comment below. --- p.s. Grab your sunnies and gardening gloves, and let’s head up. UCLA's about to take psychedelic research to new heights—literally. The university is planning a rooftop "living laboratory" for psychedelic-assisted therapy atop their Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Because nothing says "rigorous science" like dropping molly under the California sun. Dr. Helena Hansen, the mastermind behind this p̶a̶r̶a̶d̶i̶s̶e̶ new concept, wants to create a space where patients can commune with nature while exploring their inner landscapes. Imagine yourself surrounded by native plants and soothing fountains, serenaded by birdsong. (Not a bad place to dissolve and re-integrate, right?) It’s kinda like Burning Man meets Zen garden party, but with more PhDs. Hard to imagine being a psychedelic scientist and *not* relishing the opportunity to step out of the sterile clinic for once. After all, why stare at white walls when you could be chasing butterflies on MDMA? Then again, I just write a newsletter, so what do I know. The important thing to remember is: what happens on the roof, stays on the roof. Unless it gets published in a peer-reviewed journal, of course.

“Health is what happens between doctor visits.” A fantastic read in TIME by Arianna Huffington on how AI could improve health outcomes. So much of what determines a patient’s health happens outside the walls of the hospital and medical clinic. Everyday behaviors- like sleep, movement, socialization and stress management- matter!
