ARTICLE ON CHINESE EVs: Tariffs have been viewed by some as a disastrous prospect for Chinese auto exports, as the country was expected to ship 6.0 million vehicles abroad in 2024, up 22 percent year-over-year versus last year’s 4.91 million units, according to officials from the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products. China became the top vehicle exporting nation in the world in 2023, surpassing Japan, and their advances in developing affordable EVs helped to supercharge the appeal of the country’s domestically-made units.

The latest renewal of the EV Early Adoption Initiative and Vehicular Emissions Scheme tweaks mean: 1. In 2025, EVs will mostly get the same rebates as now, up to a maximum of S$40k off. 2. Hybrids are likely to see their rebate drop to S$2,500. It's a clear sign the government is continuing to focus on EVs. But it also comes at the expense of hybrids - we've seen their benefit slashed from S$15,000 (in 2013) to S$10,000 (in 2018) to S$5,000 in 2024 and just S$2,500 now. Choon Wee Ng CA said that some buyers might be swayed back to ICE cars - just S$2,500 off, and on average, hybrids are more expensive. Walter Theseira argues that hybrids have reached a point where they will pay for themselves, since they're very efficient. This is especially true for high-mileage drivers like private hires. As at August 2024, Singapore's car population is around 80 per cent petrol-only.

Electric carmakers are breaking the law by allowing batteries from scrapped vehicles to pile up in scrapyards, a senior industry figure has claimed. Auto manufacturers are legally obliged to collect waste "industrial" (including #EV) #batteries at the end of the vehicle's life. Yet the Vehicle Recyclers' Association tells The Telegraph that in many cases this simply isn't happening. With many end-of-useful-life batteries coming from crash-damaged or written-off EVs, experts warn that the fire risk from these unwanted #lithium units is increasing. Last week's brief port strike refocused a lot of attention on possible new supply-chain disruptions. But some old shortages, including for a lot of electrical equipment, have persisted away from recent headlines. CHINA EV REPORT: China has been pushing on the electric commercial vehicle market for several years, and it looks like those efforts are now paying off. More than 5,600 electric or fuel cell medium- and heavy-duty trucks were sold in China in the final month of the 2023. That was a remarkable 10 percent of the total and pulled the tally for all types of commercial EV sales in China to more than 330,000 for the year. Light commercial EVs in China took 16 percent of the market in December.

The recent adoption of a North American standard for a universal EV charging interface is big news for both EV EV drivers and EV manufacturers. Although there are a few "speed bumps" that will delay full deployment for a year or so, it will effectively double the number of EV charging stations available to the public by allowing non-Tesla vehicles to access Tesla's17,000+facilities, as well as enable Tesla vehicles to charge at any SAE J3400-compliant commercial charging station.
