🔎 Is there a place for 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘀 in the Modern Era of Investigations? 🧐 Ever noticed how the best detectives in books and movies barely need to ask a question before cracking the case? And you sit there wondering, "How'd they figure it out?!" It's not magic, it's skill! And it's a skill AI can't replicate (𝘺𝘦𝘵)! Whereas there tends to be very little "realness" in these fictional worlds, I would suggest that, like the books & movies, a good investigator 𝘾𝘼𝙉 tell you a lot about a person in just a few moments. The skills, honed over years of interactions with people (both bad guys and good guys) allow expert investigators to "decode" the human story behind the data, behind the circumstances, behind the event...in mere moments (sometimes). That "𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩" in interviews is like finding a secret passage in a digital maze. It's the shortcut that goes unnoticed or unexplored by most. Here are 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 Sherlock-esk elements*: 🧠 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗫-𝗥𝗮𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Spot micro-expressions faster than you can say "lie detector"! A raised eyebrow or a slight pause can speak volumes. 🤝 𝗥𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿: Create a vibe so comfortable, interviewees forget they're not chatting with their BFF. The Law Enforcement profession has been suffering heavily from a recruitment and retention crisis for the last 4+ years and many Law Enforcement Leaders have spoken about it repetitively. However, why is it only now that the main stream media is picking up on this? Maybe it is because community members across the nation, especially those in large cities, are more concerned for their safety and are in fear of crime more now that in the last 30 years and are speaking out against the anti-police/defund the police mantra that activists and many in main stream media have been pushing for years. Or, it might be that the main stream media sees that the defund the police movement has failed at everything except to demoralized current Law Enforcement Officers, keep good men and women from entering law enforcement, and to reduce public safety and they trying to distance themselves from their previous stand. Who knows? Historically, the LAPD has been understaffed per-capita when compared to the New York City Police Department and the Chicago Police Department but 8,800 is insanely low. Law Enforcement Leaders nationwide must continue to speak out regarding the recruitment and retention crisis in our profession. Noise is the unwanted variability in decisions made by experts who are looking at the same information. 245 police officers assessed each of these fiction scenarios based on real-world school shooting threats. Officers scored each case on a 1 (low) - 10 (high threat) scale, selected response options, and provided narrative comments about why they made these decisions. Case 1: Monday, 8:00 PM: A Twitter account with 0 followers posts a message stating there will be a shooting at Oak Creek Elementary School in your district at 9:47 am tomorrow.  Case 2: Sunday, 2:00 PM: 9-1-1 hang up call from a voice that sounds like a teenager threatens a shooting at Walnut High School in your district. No date or time is given. No answer on call back. Number traces to an online phone service with no registration information. Case 3: Wednesday, 11pm: Multi-page manifesto is posted to a community message board from an anonymous account. The document outlines a plan to attack a high school and names specific students as targets, and includes a list of weapons. No date or time is specified for the attack. Case 4: Tuesday, 10:00am: A teacher at Oak Creek Elementary finds a student’s drawing of stick figures portraying a school shooting in a trashcan. The teacher does not know which student drew the picture.  Case 5: Monday, 11:00am: Student shows school resource officer at Riverbend Middle School in your district a SnapChat thread being circulated by dozens of students. The thread shows photos of students with either a “heart” or “gun” emoji under their photo. Students on the thread are continuing to upload additional photos.  Case 6: Thursday, 2:30am: Via online threat reporting tool, an adult woman reports that her ex-husband is planning to shoot up the school. Records show he has no criminal history or disciplinary history as an employee, but multiple weapons are registered in his name. Prior to divorcing, the couple retired from teaching at Oak Creek High School. The man named as the threat is now married to a current Oak Creek High School teacher. For five of the six scenarios, scores ranged from 1 to 10 with averages between 3.5 and 7.5. This means that some individuals assessed a scenario as “10” (high threat) while the entire group of 245 officers collectively rated it as 3.5. Inversely, some officers rated a scenario as “1” (no threat) while the aggregate group score was 7.5. This is a huge range of wildly inconsistent assessments!

The concept is quite simple, less #cops means less #officers on the streets and less to investigate #crimes. This means the criminals have many more opportunities to victimize communities without fear of apprehension or consequences. This emboldens criminals and criminal gangs to not only commit crime but to continually increase there criminal activity creating more chaos and hurting more good, law abiding community members. The stats from this article show this: - From 2010 through 2022, in the Denver the number of uniformed #police declined 15.1% as the crime rate increased 32% In order to check the criminals, you need cops and you need them to be proactive. #Patrol shifts need to be properly staffed, speciality units such as Anti-Crime, Gangs, Narcotics, and Community Safety need to be staffed and deployed, and the departments need to have a proactive philosophy to encompasses active #crimefighting with constitutional #policing and community support. Department’s that institute de-policing methods (restrict traffic enforcement, less patrol coverage, reduced or eliminated speciality units, etc.) are failing their communities. When community members, not activist or politicians, are asked, they say they do not want less police on street and in their neighborhoods. They want to feel safe and they clearly state with less police they do not feel safe. This rings true regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Coffee with a Cop, Cookies with Rookies, National Night Out, etc. are all great community outreach efforts that help develop stronger relations with individuals whom are already police supporters, they are not crime fighting strategies. What is needed in Colorado as well as throughout the United States, is more Officers, better #training (Basic Academy, inservice, and advanced), a clearly defined proactive policing mission, strong #supervisory and #command support and true #leadership with the #lawenforcement organization. Police One puts out an article every year called "What Cops Want". They surveyed 2,833 active-duty police officers. What concerned me was what is revealed in the "Least satisfying about working in law enforcement" graph. Number two, only to the public's negative perception, was what they labeled as "poor agency leadership". The conclusion asserts that most police officers feel their "leadership is out of touch and does not listen to their troops". If you are in law enforcement for any length of time, you will experience this at some point in your career. When I was in an administrative position, I understood the value of 360-degree evaluations. This means that you evaluate your troops, and your troops also have the opportunity to evaluate your leadership. If law enforcement is all about accountability, why aren't we implementing 360-degree evaluations? Some may argue that the troops who are held accountable may retaliate by giving supervisors poor leadership reviews. I believe if you are intentional about the character of people you are bringing into your agency, managing out toxicity, and investing in your people, you should have nothing to fear from your employee's feedback. In the past, this formula has served me well. Leaders should be held accountable to their employees. If we are not evaluated by those we lead, how do we know our leadership is effective? Another consideration is, that if leaders are left without appropriate feedback, there is a good chance some leaders will develop a god complex and become tyrannical. This is the primary driving force to avoidable attrition in law enforcement agencies.
