What do you do if public perception and expectations are spiraling out of control during a crisis?
The best time to prepare for crises is before they occur, but the next best time is in the present. This may require taking a step back (Stop Digging) and reassessing the situation. Address the most pressing issues head-on (Rip the Band-Aid Off) and provide as much information as possible without compromising safety or investigative integrity.

How can you use your intrapersonal skills to stay calm under pressure?
I have experienced countless situations over my career where chaos becomes contagious. In these situations, it is critical to take a step back, sometimes physically, not just metaphorically, and take a breath. Focus on the first thing that is within your control to solve, regardless of your status in the group. If you are not in a position of leadership, you can still be a leader, taking initiative within your span of control. Knowing your role within your team and being a great follower is every bit as important as being a good leader, if not more so. Solve the first and most immediate problem, and then take another pause, reflect, and look for the next problem to work on.
