In my experience, many organizations do not fully understand the role of a Chief Information Security Officer. This lack of understanding can lead to misaligned expectations and missed opportunities. Today, I want to clarify what it truly means to be a CISO and how we can ensure our roles are valued and effective within our organizations. First and foremost, a real CISO is not just a technical expert. We are strategic leaders who focus on the financial success of our companies. Our primary job is to look at numbers, revenue, and profitability, and find ways to use cybersecurity to enhance these metrics. If we are not doing this, we are missing out on the true impact we can have. Being a CISO means sitting with other executives, participating in key meetings, and having a voice in strategic decisions. We should be spending significant time with the executive team, understanding their concerns, and providing insights that help shape the direction of the company. This involvement is crucial for ensuring that cybersecurity is integrated into the broader business strategy. Moreover, we must be clear about our compensation and reporting structures. A true CISO is compensated based on the performance of the company and reports directly to the CEO or equivalent. If there are multiple layers between us and the CEO, we may not be positioned effectively to influence top-level decisions. It's important to recognize these factors and strive to align ourselves accordingly. Let's embrace our roles as strategic leaders. Let's ensure we are involved in executive discussions, focused on financial success, and positioned to make a real impact. By doing so, we can elevate the role of the CISO and drive significant value for our organizations.
