What are the best ways to find a mentor in a remote work environment?
Spending regular time with your mentors helps to build trust. Make it a point to schedule regular reoccurring meetings ups; in different forms - over meals, office visits, events, community service, etc. mentoring can be both formal and casual and having a variety of interactions allows both the mentor and mentee to move from performative to relational faster which in turn builds trust.

Mentors are every where, consider having a portfolio of people to give you a diverse and unique perspective than your own. I find that I develop faster when I’m challenging to consider other opinions, learn from various background and experience.

When you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and receive from a mentoring relationship, it’s easier to communicate it to future mentors. You can be clear about reciprocal outcomes and give the future mentor consideration to determine if they are the right fit for your needs.

How can you build a successful team culture through communication?
Can I take this further? To sustain a thriving team culture through communication, the team must incorporate psychological safety. A diverse, inclusive, free from bias-and, and psychologically safe team will rule the day. Ensuring everyone feels psychologically safe allows for direct, open, honest discourse. Everyone on the team can communicate by sharing ideas and calling out issues without the threat of isolation, termination, or retaliation. Psychologically safe teams are more innovative, have better communication, and are free from the trapping of groupthink.

About 80% of Black leaders who seek out my coaching services and aspire to become more effective and impactful leaders lack employer support. Often, they are even fearful of asking their employer for this investment. Instead, they fund it out of their own pockets. ❗Keep in mind, Black women earn 58.5% less than White men (Catalyst, 2022 via Canadian Women’s Foundation), making it challenging to invest in themselves. From my experience, these are the three common scenarios Black women face regarding coaching: 1. Unaware of Available Coaching Opportunities: Many Black employees do not know if coaching is part of their organization's talent management strategy. If they are unaware, it effectively means it isn’t accessible to them. 2. Denied Requests for Development: When Black employees ask for development opportunities, the answer is often no, or the process for approval requires a business case rationalizing the request. Excuses range from budget constraints to doubts about their potential or impact. This reflects outdated and biased talent review practices. 3. Hesitation to Advocate for Themselves: Many Black employees, even those in senior roles, feel hesitant to ask for investment in their development. This hesitation stems from a lack of normalized support and the internalized belief, based on lived experience, that they are not worthy of such investment. Although I’ve developed a self-advocacy guide to help them request these investments, it shouldn't be necessary. I’ve yet to encounter this issue with non-Black employees whose organizations contract my services. Employers, sponsors, and allies need to recognize that investing in Black women’s development through coaching is crucial. This investment should place them in environments where they feel safe, understood, and are given the space to thrive. As a Black female CEO, managing mental well-being is not just a personal priority—it's a crucial aspect of effective leadership. Navigating the intersectional challenges we face in leading organizations requires a nuanced understanding of both our own needs and those of our teams. The unique pressures of being a Black woman in leadership often mean confronting stereotypes, combating systemic biases, and balancing multiple roles. These challenges can significantly impact our mental health, making it essential to prioritize self-care and mental well-being. For me, this means setting boundaries, seeking support, and cultivating spaces where open conversations about mental health are encouraged. It's about fostering an environment where every team member feels valued, heard, and supported. We must advocate for ourselves and our well-being, recognizing that our mental health directly influences our ability to lead effectively. This advocacy extends beyond personal care to institutional change, ensuring that our organizations implement equitable practices that support the mental health of all employees, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. Leading with a focus on mental well-being is not only beneficial for individual health but also strengthens our organizations. It promotes resilience, fosters innovation, and builds a culture of compassion and inclusivity. As leaders, we must ask ourselves: 🟣 How are we creating spaces that prioritize mental well-being in our workplaces? 🟣 What steps are we taking to ensure open and supportive conversations about mental health? 🟣 How can we better advocate for the mental health needs of marginalized employees? 🟣 What institutional changes can we implement to support the mental well-being of our teams? The BOLD Mastermind, an intimate space for Black Women Executives to brainstorm and serve as thought partners to one another, is well underway. We recently completed the first quarter of the 12-month experience, culminating with a phenomenal speaker, Ariel Belgrave Harris, CEO of Gym Hooky, who shared her unique perspective on wellness in her presentation, "Pause on Purpose." Did you know there are five different kinds of rest? No spoilers here, but if you haven't heard Ariel's keynote, you should. Her topic aligns nicely with my thoughts on the emotional and mental toll leading through change can take on a leader. As we lead, we aren't just responsible for our own feelings; we must also be aware of and support the feelings of those we lead. When considering the impact of organizational change, our first thoughts go to those directly affected, as it can be life changing. However, there is another side to the story. The leaders who execute the process and deliver the message are also affected. I've never met a leader who wasn't torn apart by having to deliver news about changes in someone's employment status. It takes a lot out of you. Then there are the people left behind, who may experience feelings of survivor guilt, loss of a co-worker, and questions about changing roles. The leader must navigate their own emotions while simultaneously supporting their team through the transition. It’s a topic worth discussing. I'm hosting a ROUNDTABLE EXPERIENCE FOR BLACK WOMEN EXECUTIVES who have had this experience, are preparing for organizational change, or find themselves currently in the midst of an organizational change. We won't discuss the specifics of the change but will talk about ways to lead through it. Part one of the Roundtable will focus on strategies and tips for effectively leading teams through change. In Part two, we'll discuss resilience and well-being with a panel of three Black women executives in senior-level roles as they share tips for leading through change without sacrificing your well-being. It was so great to be on this panel for Black Girls Code last night and engage with and empower other women of color in one space! During this session, I shared my QUEEN acronym to mitigate feelings of imposter syndrome: ❓ Question Doubts: Analyze and question your self-doubts to uncover their root causes. 💪 Understand Your Strengths: Know and leverage your unique strengths and skills. 😍 Enlist Allies: Surround yourself with people who support and uplift you. 🤗 Embrace Your Identity: Recognize and honor the unique perspective and strengths that come from your identity. 🌷 Nurture Growth: Continuously seek opportunities for personal and professional growth. On the individual level, I also discussed the importance of managing stress and trauma as a way to ensure you are embodying the success you desire for yourself and can integrate into spaces that may have historically caused you pain and continue to re-trigger and re-traumatize you. It's not about succumbing to or taking responsibility for harmful systems, but not succumbing to how they were designed to make us feel and respond. On the organizational level, I spoke about organizations continuing to prioritize inclusion, equity, accessibility, and justice to not only attract marginalized talent but retain it so that we can continue to see possibility models and create business cases against bias and stereotypes. Investing in leaders and managers to be trauma-informed is also key to addressing the practices and behaviors that cause barriers to inclusion, psychological safety, and belonging. Did you know we’re living in the Decade of Black Innovation? For the past few years, I’ve been a proud member of Black Innovation Alliance, an organization at the forefront of building the equitable economy we all deserve. As a member, I’ve had so many incredible opportunities to develop as a business leader, ecosystem builder, and innovator. Each year, BIA hosts an annual Sustainability Summit to engage and energize our members from around the world. This year, I had the privilege of vending during the opening reception and sharing more about my book, The Ghetto VC. I’m so proud to share this was the first time I was able to sell out of my inventory, and I’m so grateful to everyone who purchased a signed paperback. Before BIA, I felt very alone in doing the work that I’ve committed my life to.
