Some great iSpot.tv data in this article from MediaPost. Subaru taking wins in Oct and Q3 for ads creating the most purchase intent!! Some major spend increases by OEM's, pretty much centered around sports for strong reach, but ad impressions were down! Spending more for less impressions, except on streaming where manufacturers like Hyundai and Toyota grew share of voice and impressions. The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Prime Video & Amazon Studios are reportedly finalizing a deal that could change the game for sports media, and putting pressure on Warner Bros. Discovery and NBCUniversal According to executives with direct knowledge of the talks, the streaming service is set to become a major home for the league’s games. Prime Video's package is expected to include significant regular season and postseason games, and possibly even some conference finals. The contract is anticipated to be for at least a decade and slated to begin during the 2025-2026 season. More than just media.

Absent from the story about the rise of the WNBA is the most obvious contributor: Sports betting. A recent Wall Street Journal profile highlighted the growing shift in the WNBAs emerging viewership: more young male fans tuning in than ever before. And while in part this is due to recent stars like Caitlin Clark, there is a more obvious influence at play: a window in the sports betting calendar where fans have nothing to bet on but baseball. My hunch is that people tuning in has as much to do with new stars as new stars to bet on. And that’s ok! I’m just surprised why the narrative has left out such an obvious part of the WNBA viewership journey. But it reminds me that brands betting on sports are quite literally betting on people betting on sports. While this will have no ramifications in the short term, there will be a long term trend of sports viewership and betting exploding together, and brands implicitly bankrolling millions of Americans addiction to sports gambling. This will come to a head in 3-5 years. More stories of addiction will seep into culture. Bipartisan legislation will put an eye on this sector of the industry. Brands who flocked to sports for brand safety will start escaping it in the name of it. But until then, we celebrate the other side of the coin: emerging sports who are finally getting their due and recognition, and brands stepping up to the plate to fund overlooked sports properties that need it most. ✅🖥️ DIGIDAY (9/20): “The NFL overhauled its app ahead of the season’s kickoff last week, placing its ad-free RedZone streaming service at the center of its NFL+ premium customer offering. At the same time, European soccer leagues including France’s Ligue 1 and Italy’s Serie A have pushed forward with their streaming efforts, with the former’s games now shown online only in the crucial U.K. and Ireland market. Sports organizations know that demand for these services stems, in part, from the complexity (and cost) consumers face when trying to view every televised match their team takes part in. NBA games, for example, are set to be split across four different media providers, while English Premier League fans would have to subscribe to Sky Sports, TNT Sport and Amazon Prime Video to follow their club’s season in its entirety. RedZone is priced lower than cable or streaming packages — $35.99 a year, compared to $59.99 for CBS and Peacock, for example — and has been available through the NFL+ subscription package as a standalone streaming service since 2023. It’s now the centerpiece of the NFL’s digital app, and a major component of the NFL’s attempt to answer that consumer demand for simplicity. The service itself is simple enough — a subscription simulcast that pulls from CBS and Fox’s live Sunday coverage, bouncing between games with no breaks and no ads (though, there is room for advertisers around the edges — DraftKings, for example, currently sponsors RedZone). ✅🖥️NYT (8/18): “Unlike its biggest rivals, which allocate huge budgets for original programs or premium sports rights like the NFL or the NBA, Tubi’s library contains tens of thousands of older shows and movies, many that seem to have been collected from the bargain bin. Some popular programs on the service include the 1970s procedural “Columbo” and an early 2000s UPN sitcom, “Everybody Hates Chris.” Horror, thriller and true crime programs also do particularly well, executives said. Tubi also has reruns of older network programming like “Empire” and “Scandal. Fox bought Tubi for $440 million in 2020, the media company’s effort to move into streaming. It has since become something of a favorite for Lachlan Murdoch, Fox’s CEO, who often touts its growth to investors in earnings calls. Rich Greenfield, an analyst at LightShed Partners, said consumers have become increasingly tolerant of commercials on streaming, and Tubi’s popularity boils down to one thing: “People love free. Another analyst, Tim Nollen of Macquarie, said he was caught off guard by the sudden success of Tubi, along with other free streaming services. “They seem to be largely venues for people to find random old things that they wouldn’t have normally thought to watch,” he said. “In many households, they have replaced the TV set that people would just leave on all the time. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is on the brink of lucrative media deals with NBCUniversal, Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios and The Walt Disney Company/ESPN, potentially bringing in a staggering $76 billion in revenue over 11 years, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. NBCUniversal is set to pay an average of $2.5 billion annually to showcase about 100 games per season, with half airing exclusively on Peacock. Amazon's deal, valued at $1.8 billion, includes regular season and playoff games, an in-season tournament, and "play-in" games. The Walt Disney Company, on the other hand, is expected to pay about $2.6 billion each year to continue broadcasting the NBA Finals, receiving fewer games but expanding coverage to ESPN's forthcoming direct-to-consumer platform.
