Newly released data from the Presidio-NCM Average Dealership Performance Benchmark reveals that the typical dealer isn’t acting quickly enough to rein in expenses that rose during the heights of the pandemic profit boom. The average dealership saw its variable gross profit plunge 32 percent since 2022, but its total personnel expense has dropped by just 6 percent during the same period. “We’re surprised that the typical dealership hasn’t adjusted its spending and variable costs as quickly and appropriately as it should have given the decline in profitability over the last two years,” said George Karolis, president of The Presidio Group. “This is a time when dealers must be nimble and adjust quickly to the industry’s changing circumstances, and many of them have not.” According to the benchmark, which is produced by The Presidio Group and NCM Associates, net pretax profit for the average franchised store dropped 33.4 percent through the first half of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. Even so, the average dealership’s profit was still 1.7 times 2018’s level. Dealers that use an MPI when explaining a vehicle’s maintenance needs tend to have an increased $/CPRO average. Why not use a MPI when appraising a car to justify your trade value? The average U.S. franchised dealership saw net pretax profit slip 33.4% in the first half of 2024, according to the latest dealership performance benchmark report from The Presidio Group and NCM Associates. Pretax profit for the typical franchised dealership has declined roughly 50% from its peak in 2021. In early 2023, Joe St. John went back to his roots, put on a dealership polo, and sold cars at a Subaru dealership in Southern California. He did this to test and refine the AutoFi selling platform (which was in pilot phase at the time) based on the everyday realities of selling cars. Great read. We tend to place less emphasis on the turn rate of new vehicles and assume because they are New it is normal to leave them in the showroom until they are sold. This is not the same way we treat pre owned inventory. If we know the vehicles at price points that are typically slow moving why not get aggressive and maximize the turn to prevent them from aging slowly only to have to do so when that same new vehicle approaches its 1 year anniversary. Certainly a strategy worth exploring and working on with your teams across the board to prevent “old stock” in new cars no differently than in our used car departments. @toyotanorthwestedmonton National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) anyone with any knowledge on “daily storage charges” could prove this to be a vital operational practice. #CarDealers need to stay aware of 2025 model-year prices. Many OEMs are cutting prices and both MMR and the guide books used to appraise cars do not update in real-time. AccuTrade (A Cars Commerce Solution) by Cars Commerce does!
