While MarTech tools undoubtedly solve pain points, implementing them can create new ones.🤔 It’s fascinating how it happens. The best intentions are brought to the purchase cycle. Your team has even run an RFP and found a partner who could solve each presented use case. Heck, even the engineering team is behind the decision. Check, check, check! Implementation goes as expected, and you’re getting value out of the tool. The pain point is solved. Everyone gathers for a glass of bourbon in this fantasy MarTech world. Fast-forward three years. Your CFO is looking to recoup the budget and asks what tools you can live without. You reevaluate the tool and find that one of your other tools has a similar feature that solves the pain point to equal effect. You align on resourcing, migrate the functionality, and cut the tool. Bam.☄ And yes, you just spent three years of your budget on a tool you didn’t need in the first place. And no, you’re not alone. This is a pervasive problem that’s more common than you think. Most evaluations fail to identify the specific features of a tool that solves particular use cases. Let’s review how to do this correctly. Example: a FinTech brand has a use case of upselling high-yield savings accounts to customers with average monthly balances exceeding $30k and an engagement score greater than 0.75. The MarTech stack consists of Iterable, Hightouch, BigQuery, and Tray.io. Features needed are deep segmentation, validation of marketing permissions, a data science model to generate engagement scores, the ability to send email and SMS communications to targeted customers, and a pipeline to send data securely. Based on those four requirements, here are the features we can tap into: Iterable  ✔Deep segmentation based on attribute and event data ✔Out of the box ML engagement model ✔Sends targeted email and SMS  ✔Holds a record of marketing permissions Hightouch ✔Audience segmentation based on data within the warehouse ✔Pipes data securely from the data warehouse BigQuery ✔Holds the segmentation criteria, including user attributes ✔Holds a record of users marketing permissions ✔Generates data science model for engagement score Tray.io ✔Pipes data securely from the data warehouse There's a lot of overlap. One use case isn’t enough to run a consolidation exercise, but it is important to note available options. This use case could be solved with just Iterable, Hightouch, and BigQuery, using out-of-the-box features. Alternatively, use your own data science model and do most of the heavy lifting through Hightouch’s Audience feature.🤯 The path forward will depend on the underlying data required, the level of effort to accomplish it with any given combination of tools, and any additional costs associated with activating those features that enable the solution. It’s a lot of work, don’t get me wrong, but having this level of clarity from the outset will prevent over-tooling and ultimately increase the efficiency of your team.

Jon Martin had an interesting post about SAAS integrations that got me going. I'm jumping into the party. (Thanks for the inspo!) Having been down this rodeo with many tools, systems, businesses and priorities, here are the top things I see missed by companies and vendors set them up: 🌳 They fail to pass original source data in, handicapping marketing in understanding what's driving business and where to allocate budget. 💹 They underestimate tool complexities. Just because there is an integration doesn't mean you can move what you want from one place to another. If one tool doesn't accept the field type the data is stored in, it can create a lot of challenges to move data. Some are surmountable, some are not. We prefer to sign an NDA to investigate and put a real proposal together so we know what limitations are up front. 🔛 They don't properly merge data between systems for integration. If you have pre-existing data in each tool, how will you make them talk to each other so they work together? Workflows, updating data on one side... many ways to solve for, but they HAVE to be solved for. 💧 They don't do data cleansing first (often tied with above). Leaving it for after creates way more headaches. Whenever possible (there are times you can't, I get it), take the extra time up front to cleanse your data so you aren't passing faulty data and creating extra duplicates, conflicting source data or more. 🔩 They don't think about long-term maintenance. Is this built in a way it can be managed long-term with the resources available? Are you getting stuck in long-term contracts with a vendor or software service (that might be okay, but you need to walk in knowingly)? Can you easily make updates and tweaks based on new company strategy, teams, data changes? #softwareintegrations #vendormanagement

We are ecstatic for the latest FTC Ruling on Click to Cancel! This applies to ANY type of subscription service, B2B, D2C. Sellers have more responsibility to prove what they agreed to offer & that buyer is able to understand it + make it as easy to cancel as it was to sign up. This is EXCELLENT news for consumers, business owners, etc. Bad news for businesses that profit off these subscription based service companies that thrive off of reoccurring revenue. *cough* SEO, gyms, healthcare, credit monitoring, online content / media companies

Not so great agencies blame the client when they get fired. Great agencies understand that almost 100% of the time, they are at fault too. Everyone loses clients for one reason or another. Yes, even great agencies. Great agencies seek to learn, to understand, to see how they can avoid whatever it was, in the future. Bad agencies point fingers, blame everyone but themselves, and can't find fault within. They make off boarding a pain in the ass. Losing clients sucks, but it's part of the game. You just hope it doesn't happen often. You should lose and off board clients as gracefully as you win and onboard them. As we know, the day you start working with a client, is the day you start losing them.
