Banks are navigating choppy waters as they brace for a 5-10 basis point (bps) compression in Net Interest Margins (NIMs), driven by the rising cost of funds and a shift in deposit patterns. After a lacklustre Q1, the recent improvement in deposit growth offers some relief, yet challenges remain. Key Highlights: ➡️ NIM Pressure: Experts predict a 5-10 bps decline in NIMs due to the increasing cost of funds and a declining CASA ratio. This trend has been particularly challenging for small finance banks (SFBs), which rely more on high-cost deposits. ➡️ Sluggish Credit Growth: Credit growth has decelerated to 14% YoY and just 4% QoQ in Q2FY25, with private sector banks adjusting their Loan-to-Deposit Ratios (LDR) to maintain liquidity. ➡️Shift in Deposit Trends: Deposit growth has shown signs of recovery, but banks are leaning more on term deposits, leading to higher funding costs. As distribution cycles lengthen, traditional LPs face prolonged negative cash-flow risks -- now going on a decade plus -- with liquidity challenges reshaping LP strategies and fund compositions. 🤷‍♂️ With distributions pushed further and further out, who really is the target LP? EquiLend’s Head of Data & Analytics, Nancy Allen, spoke with FTF to discuss the 6% year on year decrease in revenue for lenders detailed in the Q3 DataLend Press Release. While there is growing optimism around event-driven and specifically merger arbitrage strategies going forward, recent performance has not kept up with most other hedge fund strategies.    We shared our latest monthly Pivotal Point of View data with Caitlin McCabe for a recent piece in the The Wall Street Journal. PivotalPath's Event Driven Index returned 3.4% YTD through March of 2024.
