Russell and I did some videos a few weeks ago.  They were so interesting (at least to me) that we sat down together again! Procurement: How are you helping your finance team and CFO during this budgeting season? Stay on top of market/pricing trends and benchmarks – this will inform accurate (and efficient) forecasting for the next year. No one wants a budget variance, just ask Tropic #CFO Russell Lester. #Finance and #Procurement are better together, especially when it comes to budgeting and planning. 💡 Probably a better way to state this is the longer the lead time the more exposure and liability you have. I’m always amazed by the manager who says don’t ever run out of inventory, but never have more than 30 days of inventory. And they says this for a 16 week lead time item. Did you know SI&OP (Sales, Inventory, and Operations Planning) experts are among the hardest skillsets to develop and even harder to find and recruit? Having spent the last 30+ years working across all functional disciplines of Supply Chain in the public & private sectors, I know firsthand why there are so few of us across the industry. Let’s look at why: -         It’s a complex skill set that is broad and deep with strong analytical thinking and cross-functional knowledge (Typically supply chain functions have little exposure outside of meetings with other business functions). It is very rare to find experts who have excelled in progressive roles across multiple business functions in the end-to-end supply chain value network. -         SI&OP experience requires time to develop and very few have spent enough time to truly develop and master skills across all levels of SI&OP (Strategic, Enterprise, Operational, Tactical). I often find those in a supply chain role have a wide mix of education, skills & experience that does not necessarily connect or associate directly with the roles they are filling and leads to high turnover rates. -         No other business function demands the level of critical thought necessary to mitigate risk and manage disruptions across a complex global mixed model multi-tier value network while simultaneously dealing with competing priorities, protecting the customer and the business's financial bottom line with every decision they make. -         Understanding that the tech industry has spent several decades developing point solutions for individual business problems. Knowledge of a wide array of core platforms like ERP’s, PLM’s, WMS’s, etc., and their core capabilities as well as constraints forcing them to master the art of managing a business by Excel.  -         Let’s not forget the many business personas and political landmines they must manage daily. Executive messaging and influence is a skill mastered by only a select few. This time last year, a few of us sat down to figure out how we could create a platform for thought leaders to share practical advice on all things inventory. The result was the Inventory Planner Masterclass Series—a monthly, expert-led webinar series focused on really helping retailers optimize inventory, boost profitability, and reduce overstock. A simple idea in theory, but much trickier to execute. Since January, we’ve hosted eight webinars, with over 1,500 signups, a 34% attendance rate, and more than 450 leads. It’s been a fantastic result for a low-cost, integrated campaign, and personally, one of my highlights of the year. I wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to share their expertise—partners, customers, writers, analysts, and more. The list is long, but great content always builds an audience, and we couldn’t have achieved any of this without you. I’ve tagged everyone I could below—apologies if I missed anyone!
