The Yankees Win Even When They Lose Love them or hate them, the New York Yankees are one of the most talked about teams in all of sports. What makes them so compelling? For starters, they play in the largest media market in the US. They've played in 41 World Series and won 27 championships over their 122-year history. Think about that. They go to the World Series on average of once every three years. They have 42 players enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Some of the biggest stars in baseball including Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, A-Rod and Jeter have worn pinstripes. They've also had some of the biggest characters in MLB history (It's hard to forget Yogi Berra and Billy Martin). The Yanks have made more good decisions than bad decisions over the years. Signing Babe Ruth. Hiring Joe Torre. Going with vertical stripes instead of horizontal stripes (Which happen to make players like CC Sabathia look slimmer. See below if you don't believe me.) Love them or hate them, there are three indisputable truths about the Yankees. 1- They win a lot. 2- They sign some of the best players and biggest characters in baseball. 3- They are compelling. So, Dodger fans, enjoy your well-deserved title. Everyone else- take pleasure in the Yankees loss if it makes you feel better. Just know this. The New York Yankees will be back in the World Series. The U.S. sports betting market continues to grow as more Americans wager more money on live events. The AGA reported YTD commercial sports betting revenue reached $8.36bn through August (+30.4% YoY). However, the related advertising dollars are not flowing as easily as they once did with FanDuel and DraftKings Inc. entrenched as the regulated market leaders in all 30 legal mobile betting jurisdictions and the pace of states adding new OSB or online casino legislation having slowed to a crawl. Logic would suggest that reality will begin to impact sports rights owners and holders over time–if the trend doesn’t change. One “shouldn't assume that just because available ad dollars have dropped off this year, spending will stay at this level or drop off further in the future," Chris Grove (co-founding partner, Acies Investments) said. "There are numerous reasons why marketing spend could turn back upward.” But there is a new class of gaming companies –social sweepstakes casinos (think: VGW Play, Stake.us) and sportsbooks (think: Fliff Inc)– capable of helping sports properties and their media partners replace lost revenues in the interim. These entities are growing faster, operating in more states, and can be more profitable than regulated counterparts (though, none are nearly as profitable as FanDuel or DraftKings). For context, Virtual Gaming Worlds reported in September that it increased annual net profits by 30% YoY to $335mm on record revenues of $4.15bn. Sweepstakes are games of chance where no purchase is necessary to win. 📉 Lousiana’s October 2024 Betting Revenue Takes a Dip, Despite Higher Handle 🏈 📱 The Louisiana Gaming Control Board reported that mobile sportsbooks generated an impressive $368.3 million handle last month, representing a 15.1% increase from September 2024 and a strong 33.3% surge from October last year. 📊 However, even though October’s mobile sports betting revenue saw a 4.7% year-on-year growth, it fell 13.1% compared to figures from September. ⚾ Retail sportsbooks in the Pelican State also experienced growth, with $33.6 million wagered in October (up from $31.7 million in September and $32.4 million last October).
