In three weeks the Michigan #HRCommunity will be gathering in Grand Rapids, Michigan for MISHRM 2024! Sharing a few tips as I plan my agenda for what will be an amazing three days of #HRConversations #HRConnections and #HRCommunity *Download the Conference WHOVA app on your Phone!! If you have not downloaded WHOVA make that a must! WHOVA is our conference experience platform this year which will be your guide to sessions, activities and all things MISHRM (including the SHRM Foundation auction! What can you control? Your elections to open enrollment! This time of year, many companies have open enrollment options. Take time to review the options available to you ,so you can make informed decisions to best support you and your loved ones. One benefit that I make use of is our employee assistance program.  Employee assistant programs (EAP) are designed to help employees manage personal and work-related issues. In addition to confidential support for a variety of issues including counseling, stress, anxiety, family and financial concerns, they offer professional assistance. I recently used EAP to help plan a trip to New York! This season review what benefits your company has and what you are currently using. According to a recent report by Paycor, nearly half of HR professionals are new to their roles, having been in their positions for two years or less. This is significant because it points to a potential area that needs more support. With so many HR professionals still finding their footing, there's a clear need for ongoing training and development within our own ranks. The report also emphasizes that C-suite executives view HR as the primary driver of leadership development. However, they cite a 'lack of HR support' and 'outdated performance management systems' as key reasons for ineffective management. This underscores how critical our role is in shaping and supporting effective leaders within the organization. One of the standout points for me was the connection between effective management and employee engagement and retention. It’s clear we need to focus on supporting our own team members, investing in leadership development, and fostering a culture of open communication and trust. ACA compliance penalties range from thousands to millions of dollars. Right now, the number ranges from $2,970 to $4,460 per employee per year, depending on the type of violation with ACA compliance. For example, if your compliance issues involves not providing "affordable health care" to your staff as defined by ACA, and have just one employee go to the marketplace for coverage to purchase coverage (which will be very traceable and trackable to your business to trigger a potential issue), you could be required to pay a penalty per employee of $2,970 for every. single. employee you have for that period of non-compliance. If that is even just one year of time (let's face it, if you've not complied one year, it's probably been many), and you're the smallest an ACA regulated business can be (50 FTE employees), that's staring down a fine of $148,500. Offer affordable health care but don't bother doing the annual required ACA reporting or forms filing? You're looking at other penalties that can easily total six digit figures or more for this as well. ACA compliance is no joke. And IRS audits have been increasing in recent years, meaning compliance violations are more likely to be discovered. > Do you offer affordable health care to everyone you are required to? > Do you have employees getting coverage on the marketplace? > Are you completing and submitting ACA reports each year, along with sending required notices to staff? If you're uncertain about any of these answers, do yourself a favor and contact someone to help you identify your needs and risks, before you learn the answers the much harder way. Adding a new state can stress out your Payroll and HR Teams more than most companies might be aware of. Often individual counties within each state have their own PTO/Sick Pay Rates and in the case of some places such as New York, there are even different rates for each borough. Add on top of that different minimum wage rates and laws around Insurance for each state. It is very important that as companies expand, they let the back office teams know as soon as possible about the possible expansion so that they can prepare, and if necessary research the new states laws to remain compliant. Payroll and HR Teams should also remember to let their Payroll/HRIS Provider know as well, as they likely have resources setup to help with this process already. #payroll #hris #expansion
