The Apple/Epic beef is tragic (for both companies). Let's count the ways. 1. AAA games are (finally!!) strategic to Apple's go-to-market Apple wants to iterate on Apple Silicon until gamers can't tell the difference between games running on a Playstation and a MacBook, iPhone Pro, Apple TV, and iPad. It also needs a growing library of compelling, immersive experiences for the Vision Pro. AAA game studios like CD PROJEKT RED are using Epic's Unreal Engine to build the next entries in their popular franchises (The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077). Deep software / hardware support for Epic Games's Unreal Engine would make it cheaper and faster to bring games of that caliber to Apple's entire ecosystem devices... AND offer a path to "spin-offs" specifically designed for the Vision Pro. The Apple/Epic beef makes that level of support unlikely. 2. Apple (finally!) has the beginnings of a compelling value prop to AAA game studios: * Port your titles to Apple Silicon using our DirectX converter * Deliver them across Apple's entire device ecosystem without rewriting a ton of code. But the perception of Apple as a rent-seeking "gatekeeper" hostile to major developers' business models complicates the story. The Apple/Epic beef just reinforces this perception. 3. Epic and Tim Sweeney have a huge vision for immersive gaming and 3D worlds. The Apple Vision is the best hardware to make it so. While the VR / metaverse hype cycle has definitely crashed, immersive gaming and 3D worlds remain highly promising use cases for spatial computers. The Vision Pro has the most powerful hardware and compelling user interface in the category. And Apple has every advantage in hardware and software necessary to keep it that way... Epic's "metaverse" vision would get a huge boost from a positive, mutually-aligned relationship with Apple. What's the opposite of a positive, mutually-aligned relationship with Apple? Beef.

ROI is making it RAIN!!! (aka incremental revenue) No Seattle jokes please;) We are working with large scale publishers in News, Sports, Entertainment, Health, Travel, and Autos verticals. High volume, high frequency. STOP READIG NOW if you are not interested or incentivized by incremental revenue. Now that we have dropped nonrevenue incented/operation types, let's talk about increasing revenue. If you are selling 100% of your supply you are in a rare, probably non-optimized group. Most publisher do not and should not fill more than 75% of supply directly. Using the bottom 25% to leverage floors higher, increasing bids/ecpm. ROI allows publishers the opportunity to efficiently monetize 100% of their supply. Accomplishing this by selling unfilled outside of the direct adstack in a secondary auction or post-bid strategy. We will deliver real time market data on supply value, allowing publishers to understand supply value and flooring. Selling and optimizing your unsold is a simple and import part of a balanced programmatic strategy. Today marks Recharge’s 10th anniversary. There’s a lot to celebrate with this moment, and 2024 was a banner year, surpassing $100 million in ARR, powering 20,000 merchants and topping 100 million subscribers served by our platform. But I also want to be real for a second. The last ten years haven’t been easy but two things have kept me focused and made the highs even better, and pushed me to persevere during the lows. 1. “From humble beginnings come great things.” This quote has been with us since the earliest days of Recharge and it’s with us today. We never lose sight of the fact that we are always at the beginning of something great, and bigger than we know. 2. Focusing on helping the lives of merchants. Our mission of making the lives of everyone that we serve at Recharge better is why I get up in the morning ready to solve new problems. There’s no doubt that our merchant-first mission has enabled us to scale and hit those exciting milestones. We started Recharge because we saw an opportunity and a need in the ecommerce space. Looking back, I don’t think we could have predicted how much growth, change, and excitement would come over the course of a decade. I’m grateful to everyone who’s been part of the Recharge journey. We could not have made it to year 10 without the hard work of our team, the trust of the brands we work with, and the collaboration from our ecosystem partners. Reflecting on the past 10 years is what energizes me to plan for the next 10. So, here’s to tomorrow.

After months of hard work from the Pixel team here at Triple Whale, I am excited to announce our most recent release: Sonar. Sonar turns Triple Whale into a robust, first-party data enrichment platform for external platforms. In just a few clicks, customers can now send Triple Pixel event data and enriched customer data back to Meta and Klaviyo. I wonder if Triple Whale customers know that the feature “Sonar”, which starts at $5k/year, is just a default server-side implementation which takes 30 minutes to set up and has an ongoing cost of $20/month. Same for all the other leading attribution tools by the way, some of them even more expensive than TW. Sure, these platforms offer other features, but that extra 10-20% additional conversions tracked is the main reason why businesses use these tools in the first place.

Packed house for #ATSL24 and a great discussion between Jeff Green, CEO of The Trade Desk and our own Ciarán O'Kane of FPC and ExchangeWire. The discussion touched on the lack of VC participation in AdTech (despite being a $1 Trillion addressable market). “Generalist VCs avoided AdTech because it’s complex. They often don’t understand why they’d win or lose”. This summed up exactly why FirstPartyCapital exists. A $1T+ complex sector needs specialists to fund innovation, provide deeper DD, illuminating context, access to networks and relevant portfolio support. Over time we hope this provides a stronger signal to generalist VCs and PEs. People say affiliate doesn’t work in fashion and apparel. But I disagree, you just need to be more thoughtful about it. There’s no better example of this than what Brandon Blum is building at For Others. For starters, For Others is lifestyle brand based in New York City that gives back based on zip code. As of today, they’ve donated over 91k meals AND have supported over 62 classrooms. To better deliver on this mission, they’ve increasingly turned to their community to cultivate affiliates: so they can earn by supporting the brand and communities. They call these folks: Locals. Traditionally when becoming a Local you not only get better access to the brand, but you get equipped with everything you need to be successful — and as of yesterday this now extends to getting your own cobranded pages to curate your favorite pieces, to formally endorse the brand, and to showcase your local content. Today's The Information story about the continued investment in the creator economy is GREAT news, but also no surprise. While other tech bubbles (remember NFTs? 😬) may be, uh, hype driven, creators are a proven investment. They're not just a forward looking investment, or a lottery ticket industry, they're driving content, conversation and commerce NOW. GenZ is making purchase decisions based on their recs, forgoing traditional entertainment companies for their content. Smart start-ups are building to help make them successful, and smart companies are using them as the marketing channel of now. IMO this was a pretty sharp take from Colyn Montgomery. Even though no one asked, I'll join everyone else in offering my 2 cents on AppLovin + ecom 😅 : 1) DTC marketers are smart so they are always looking for new channels that provide effective diversification + scale. That's what we are helping solve at Disco and certainly what the AppLovin team is solving (at a much bigger scale). 2) With ML + Auction dynamics at play, not everyone brand will be a "winner" but a lot of brands will win BIG. Certainly "winning" gets harder with more brands in play - so Colyn Montgomery's take on the ability to scale spend on AppLovin in H2'25 could be right. But they are so large, with so much scale, that I would be shocked if eCom doesn't keep growing fast enough to earn a separate line in their SEC filings (even if some brands don't see crazy results). This will not be dissimilar to Meta, which I would view as the primary competitor in the space. 3) I think what Disco is doing is incredibly similar to Applovin: building out a new channel (post-checkout versus in-app gaming) with ML-powered recommendations + a performance based pricing model. But like I told Teddy Kolva several months ago, AppLovin is going to succeed in this space for a variety of reasons with or without Disco: incredible people (shoutout to Cathy Sun and Paul Kennedy), really high-performing culture (everyone claims to do this but honestly very, very few can do it at that level - definitely a byproduct of Adam Foroughi's leadership), and an unceasing conviction in their ML-driven approach.

Last week I interviewed Blake La Grange, who recently sold Mastering.com and is on to his next adventure Kollege.com. He laid out some brilliant insights including a playbook for creators scaling from $0 to $1m in revenue & more 👇 If you’re an expert creator or entrepreneur in the education space, this might be very useful to you and I would love your perspective, too! Here’s how he’d approach it: 💵 Identify Your High-Value Offer: Start by selecting the most lucrative product or service that requires the least amount of effort to deliver. For instance, if you have extensive experience in sales and partnerships, consider offering a group program with weekly calls tailored for beginner-level professionals, priced at $5,000 per year (or a price that’d be >10% of the value you estimate you can create). 🤝 Leverage Your Network: Tap into your immediate network or audience for initial sales. Reach out to former clients, prospects you couldn't previously accommodate due to budget constraints, colleagues, and connections on platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn. Potentially offer a discounted price for this initial cohort to get feedback and improve the educational experience. 👂Start Small, Listen, and Adapt: Begin with a limited cohort size of no more than 30 people to ensure personalized attention and satisfaction of each student. Over the course of 2 cohorts, actively listen to your audience, identify their top challenges, and offer tailored solutions. Encourage peer-to-peer learning and support within the group. 📋 Streamline Operations: Keep operations simple by utilizing user-friendly tools like Zoom for group calls, Slack for communication, and Stripe for payments. Don’t over complicate things. 📣 Invest in Marketing: With initial revenue of $300,000 (from 2 cohorts of 30 people at $5000 each), allocate a portion towards marketing efforts. Utilize your newfound budget to run targeted ads. Craft a compelling message and refine your landing page based on insights gained from customer interactions. 👩‍🏫 Hire Strategic Support: Be humble enough to keep everything outside of your expertise as simple as possible and hire people as soon as you can outside of your zone of genius. Hire fractional team members to assist with marketing and admin tasks. Delegate responsibilities so you focus on scaling your core offerings and on doing what you love / are great at. 📈 Scale Smartly: With a solid foundation in place, you can slowly scale as you see fit. To get to $1m you’ll need 200 people at $5000, so 4 cohorts at 50 people each. Once you reach that milestone, it’s probably best to hire or partner with others who can help you with facilitation and/or delivery of the cohorts. By following these steps and remaining adaptable, an expert creator can successfully scale their business to $1M within a year.
