There's no getting around it. If you want to use a cellular radio, you are going to be using a standardized technology. However, moving one step higher in the chain, from the enabling technology itself to the manner in which it is implemented in the field, you will quickly leave the cozy confines of the standardized interface, and be thrust into a world where no two implementations are the same. This has led to an ecosystem in which vendors play an uncomfortably large part in how these technologies are implemented, and created a need for further standardization - especially for the moments that two different approaches must interact. FASTER ROI: MANAGING THE OPTIMAL JOURNEY TO HOMES ACTIVATED These days, telco network infrastructure projects are larger and more complex than ever before, and they require enormous investments. And with the current rush to maximize fiber optic network coverage, the size of these rollout investments quickly starts to weigh heavily on the balance sheet. There inevitably comes a pivotal point where the pressure to start generating returns becomes too urgent to ignore.  How to make these investments pay off – and preferably sooner rather than later? In the early days of fiber optic networks, it used to be that the decision to start with a rollout was based on a reasonable assurance that at least 40% of the homes passed would switch to fiber optic connectivity. Now, demand for faster internet is so great that surveying the area for interest beforehand isn’t necessary and maximizing fiber network coverage is the goal. But maximum coverage and larger, more complex networks mean enormous capital outlays. At a certain point, network owners need to start shifting their focus toward delivering a healthy and sustainable ROI. Shifting the focus from faster rollouts to faster ROI. One way to a faster ROI is with more insight and control over the network as early as possible during the construction phase. Large, complex fiber telco networks are a serious CAPEX challenge, especially if network owners must wait until the final delivery before they can start with the commercial activities of selling connections.  Automating control of the process with a system that allows you to manage and prioritize individual commercial areas as part of the larger rollout project can turn that challenge to a network owner’s advantage.  Not only do real-time insights and better control during the construction phase make it possible to speed up the rollout significantly by anticipating issues and improving and simplifying communication, but the continuous view to the most accurate and reliable status of every network connection means instant orderability (and even pre-ordering) as soon as each connection is complete.  With the right system for automating insights and tracking the process, network owners can market their network as they build it and start shifting the focus to ROI much sooner. Middle-mile may have become more important than ever in terms of fiber networks because all the last-mile networks that will be built for BEAD need to connect to something. But honing-in on a precise definition of middle-mile is a challenge even for industry insiders. At the Fiber Connect show, a panel of middle-mile professionals had a spirited discussion. But when the moderator, Rick Talbot from ACG Research, tried to pin panelists down on the definition of middle-mile, he had little success. Joe Pellegrini, president and COO with Great Plains Communications, said, “It’s an end-to-end system with real estate, points of presence…. T-Mobile US strikes JV to build fibre footprint: T-Mobile pulled the trigger on a deal to form a joint venture (JV) with investor company EQT to acquire US-based FTTH provider Lumos Networks and expand beyond its mobile-based broadband service. T-Mobile will invest $950 million in the JV to acquire a 50 per cent equity stake when it closes, with the funds being used by Lumos for future fibre buildouts. The operator is slated to add an additional capital infusion of $500 million between 2027 and 2028. EQT Infrastructure VI is expected to be 35 per cent to 40 per cent invested in the JV. The companies stated the investments will enable Lumos to extend its fibre reach to 3.5 million homes by end 2028. The operator has dabbled in fibre-based broadband dating back to 2021 by partnering with providers who have open access networks. Through various partnerships, the operator has launched T-Mobile Fibre in parts of 16 markets. Lumos currently reaches more than 320,000 homes over 7,500 route miles with fibre-based internet and home Wi-Fi across three US states. “As the demand for reliable, low-latency connectivity rapidly increases, this deal is a scalable strategy for T-Mobile to take a significant step forward in expanding on our broadband success and continue shaking up competition in this space to bring even more value and choice to consumers,” stated T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert. With the JV, T-Mobile could be in line to receive a portion of the $42.45 billion in government funding from the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) government programme to expand high-speed internet access across US states. When the transaction closes later this year or early 2025, Lumos will transition to a wholesale fibre company with T-Mobile as its primary tenant. The operator will take over Lumos’ customer relationships and use its brand to attract new customers. The companies stated the JV will focus on market identification and selection, network engineering and design, network deployment, and installations. T-Mobile rival AT&T struck a JV agreement with private equity firm BlackRock Alternatives in late 2022 to build out fibre beyond its traditional 21-state footprint. AT&T CEO John Stankey stated on the company’s Q1 earnings call yesterday (24 April) that fibre expansion remains one of its top priorities. This setup is suited for urban areas with high-density network demands. - Distributed RAN: places base-band units closer to the radio units, which can be beneficial for coverage and latency, particularly in rural or geographically dispersed areas. 🔵 4. Virtualized RAN (vRAN) Virtualization is a cornerstone of Open RAN, separating hardware from software functionalities. vRAN utilizes standard server hardware to run network functions as software, offering enhanced flexibility and faster deployment of new services. This approach supports the network slicing feature crucial for 5G applications, allowing operators to dedicate portions of their networks to specific services or customers. 🔵 5. In recent years there has been a lot of negative press when it comes to #telecom masts, and deservedly so. The introduction of the now not-so-new Electronic Communications Code placed more power in the hands of the telecom operator when it comes to #lease renewal #negotiations, which amongst other things has seen annual rents fall significantly. Thankfully, some common sense is beginning to prevail with an increasing number of Tribunal decisions placing rents for #rural masts in the region of £2,000 per annum. Still some way short of where they once were but at least a little more meaningful, the Tribunal decisions being a starting point from which to negotiate. It is though important to note that if you have a #mast on your property and are still under an existing fixed term agreement, it is highly likely that there will be an inflation linked rent review provision at three or five yearly intervals. If the rent hasn’t been reviewed or if rent reviews have been missed, there may be significant back #rents that could be claimed. We have had a great deal of success for retained clients on such negotiations, with back rents ranging from £10,000 to £45,0000 agreed. It is critically important that the back rent position is considered before any new lease is signed, otherwise the opportunity will be lost.
