This was a vulnerable episode of Data Driven Leadership to record, but it felt like an important one. Cancer is increasing in people younger than 50—and experts still aren’t sure why. So Jess Carter and I decided to talk about our own diagnoses and treatments, and how they have impacted our leadership and lives.  Going through cancer taught me that you can’t blindly move through life. Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a day that highlights the importance of supporting the over 1 billion people worldwide with disabilities. Beyond my personal commitment to accessibility, I’ve learned so much serving as the Co-Chair of the Disability:IN CMO & CCO coalition, and I’m so excited that this group of leaders is growing to include 17 member companies (welcome!). Like me, I'm sure you hear a lot about AI and advanced analytics. It's easy to tune out because the tech is often presented without the 'so what'. Not today. Today there were two worthy news stories that caught my eye not just for innovation but for the significant impact they can have on how we think of animals... and healthcare. The first-- this morning I read an NPR article about how a team researching sounds between elephants used machine-learning "to see if the rumbles contained identifying information-- essentially a 'name'-- that their computer model could learn to use to accurately predict the receiver of a call". Basically proving that wild elephants address each other using distinctive, rumbling sounds that could be akin to individual names. The second (and clearly I'm biased)-- my company CCS, historically known as a diabetes supplier, announced an innovative AI, machine-learning model that can predict 90 days in advance when someone is likely to fall off CGM therapy. AND THEN launch hyper-personalized interventions based on personas we crafted from consumer behavior, SDoH and claims data to actually influence the action that individual may take, resulting in them staying on therapy. Understanding another dimension about how elephants think and communicate is amazing; understanding what may cause someone living with diabetes to have a lapse in therapy and then doing something that can make a difference to that outcome is industry-changing.

Not every request deserves a yes, and sometimes the most strategic move is a well-placed no. It’s how I focus and how I protect my time and energy for the work that really matters. “There’s nothing quite like a no executed at the right time. No is all about opportunity cost, freeing up opportunity for good yeses: shutting down or delaying something to make room for something else.” In leadership, every “yes” should align with our core priorities and long-term vision. It’s about choosing the right initiatives that move the needle and having the discipline to say “no” to distractions that don’t serve our goals. “Remember, every good no is there just to set up your great yeses-saying yes to collaboration, saying yes to an opportunity to add value and build a relationship.” As leaders, we must empower our teams to make these choices with clarity and conviction. It's not about doing more; it's about doing what truly matters, what has an impact. By being intentional with our commitments, we can create a culture that values impact over activity. Both options offer unique advantages tailored to diverse needs. Lack of “relational agency” is our kryptonite. David Jay’s Stanford Social Innovation Review insights in Relationality hit hard because it explains so much of what we’re living through. Twenty years ago, we spent 30 hours a month with friends. By 2019, that dropped to 17 hours, and during the pandemic, it dove to just 10. We’re wired to connect. Yet here we are—in the middle of a loneliness epidemic that didn’t start with the pandemic but has only gotten worse. And the fallout is staggering. Loneliness doesn’t just hurt; it kills—our health, our economy, and even our democracy. When we lack “relational agency,” our bodies react as if poisoned, increasing our risk for illness. Economically, loneliness costs the U.S. $1.13 trillion annually. And societally? There’s a proven link between loneliness and the rise of authoritarianism and violent extremism. Let that sink in. But here’s what I can’t stop thinking about: What if we flipped the script? What if we prioritized real connection—at work, in our communities, and in our personal lives? What if we gave people the tools and opportunities to build relationships that matter? Imagine what would change—our health, our creativity, even our ability to solve big challenges. This is about more than “checking in” on someone. It’s about rethinking how we show up for each other and how we build systems that make connection possible. So, what do you think?
