So, I’ve completed my first week at Meta, and I must say, it was intense! One thing that’s noticeably different from when I started at Google (granted, it was 14 years ago, and a lot may have changed since then) is that, right off the bat, they send you to Bootcamp—on day 1 (well, technically day 2, since the first day is mostly new hire orientation and HR-related stuff). At Google, I spent the first few weeks with the team, learning things and then re-learning them during training. Something that stood out to me even more is the strong emphasis on speed and ruthless prioritization. I’m not exaggerating—every technical talk I’ve attended has mentioned it multiple times. It feels like the entire company is structured around the idea of speed—whether it’s building, launching, or designing. Even the case studies were about “here’s the classic disagreement between eng, prod, and UX—let’s resolve it in one day.” I’m not sure whether the company truly follows through on that promise, but I guess I’ll find out soon. To my fellow Metamates — what’s your experience with this? Is it really as fast-paced as it sounds, where the company can turn things around within the span of a week?

I've been at Amazon a long time. When I talk about my career with Amazon, the most frequent questions people ask me are: What kept me with Amazon for so many years? When I left after nearly 14 years, what drew me away? What brought me back 2 years later? The genuine answer to each, as trite as it sounds, is the same: it's the people The people who took a chance on me. The people that, when I struggled, helped me lean on my strengths and shore up my weaknesses. The people who saw potential and invested in me. The people who modeled the value of building relationships, not just building code. The people who challenged me, made me think differently, and helped me grow. As I've grown in my career it's also those people in whom I can see potential and invest, where I might take a chance to give them an opportunity, for whom my experience could be of some value as they grow, and with whom I can continue building lasting relationships. I've been with Amazon's Global Talent Management and Compensation for about a year and a half, where our mission is to help Amazonians build rewarding careers. In that time, I've met with hundreds of people in our org and every single one of them has been driven by our mission and passionate about how we can meaningfully improve the lives of every Amazon employee. I've learned so much about how challenging, rewarding, and important taking a culture-first approach can be. This post isn't a claim that Amazon is objectively unique, I know there are amazing people in every company, though it has been my personal experience that Amazon's intentionally peculiar culture is one that encourages these kinds of behavior in people. My Amazon.com credit card pays for both Amazon.com and my personal AWS setup. I had a fraud report on my old card, and got a new one. Amazon.com and Whole Foods updated seamlessly. AWS didn't know. I just got an email about the fact that my payment method didn't work. Is this a sign that AWS and Amazon.com really are separate companies? When I worked there, switching between them was equivalent to switching jobs entirely (FULL interview loop, none of your internal performance was taken into account). OR is this a sign that integrating your businesses are hard, and even the biggest and "best" cannot do it? Note: My personal AWS bill is negligible. I use it to glacier my Synology and host my very bad personal website. The cost is << $5/month.

Earlier this week, we announced an update to how Amazon Q Developer Software Agent works - https://lnkd.in/gVmTUQhA. Our efforts since making Q Developer Generally Available in May '24 have propelled the agent for software development to new heights. The SWE-bench scores have increased significantly, rising from 25.6% to 38.8% on the verified dataset and from 13.82% to 19.75% on the full dataset. This progress is a result of our customer-centric approach, incorporating developer feedback, and rapidly iterating to address pain points. What sets our agent apart is its architecture, which not only leverages the best LLMs but also equips the agent with the ability to explore multiple paths continuously to find optimal solutions for problems, similar to how developers work.
