What if my company’s spokesperson is a scientist or a physician; how can they most effectively tell our story to a layperson audience? This is a common question in healthcare communications. Being a great storyteller requires genuine connection, and those can be challenging to catalyze if the audience doesn’t perceive the speaker as relatable, or “someone like them”. The imperative for the scientist/speaker is to find balance in their language, so that the scientific rigor is preserved, but the meaning and context doesn’t go over the heads of the audience. Communications leaders can help spokespeople consider who the audience is, and importantly, what THEY expect to take away from the presentation, as meeting the needs of the audience is the primary objective. A layperson audience will require different context than the speaker’s peers, so an assessment of audience and purpose is a key first step in ensuring the speaker’s story resonates.

Federally Qualified Health Centers played a critically important role in promoting health equity during the Covid pandemic. By studying these centers, we are reminded of the power of community-centered care in addressing disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. Three key insights we can take from the pandemic and use to improve health equity in the future are: - Prioritizing relationship-building can generate trust in public health interventions. - A good public health system must acknowledge inequities and seek to correct them. - Solidarity is a necessary but underutilized value in U.S. public health. #HealthEquity #Pandemic #PatientCenteredCare

⁉ Why do people like working in communications/PR? 👇 This movie quote always comes to mind: "For me, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is the juice." I think most communicators would answer in the same way. Days are often unpredictable. You have to move fast most of the time - often with less information than you need. It's good to embrace the "action" of the job, because that's what keeps the work exciting. ✋🔥But that action can also be a recipe for burnout. Understanding when to dial things down and focus on self-care, team development and long-term planning is critical. Doing both is possible, but requires self-awareness and intention. #communications #pr #publicrelaitons

What does a corporate communications director at a professional services company dress up for Halloween - an Oxford comma. The Associated Press is part of my costume. As with all punctuation, clarity is the biggest rule. When developing communications - either internally or externally - clarity is key and thinking of your various publics is essential … and that’s what folks in public relations, corporate communications do. When we are editing and take out that Oxford comma, it isn’t you - it’s us. Clarity is key.

I've been in the PR, comms., and policy advocacy space for more than 20 years... here are some non negotiable factors for success: 1) Writing ability: Persuasiveness, clarity, organization, and yes, speed. These things take time but if you don't like and want to get really good at writing, this biz is REALLY not for you. 2) Resilience: There’s lots of ups and downs. Pitching clients, media, lobbying elected officials, urgent deadlines, late nights, early mornings. Frequent rejection, changes in media landscape, content consumption habits and technology. Reputation crises outside of your control. Budget cuts. Tough skin and old school grit are imperative. 3) News Junkie: If you don't love and closely follow current events particularly in the sectors you work in, you're at a massive disadvantage to others that do. 4) Self Awareness: Understanding of how others perceive you, your work and values. Willingness to absorb feedback. 5) Sense of Humor: Yup, I said it. I’ve literally never met anyone successful in this world who couldn’t elicit a good chuckle. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Any big ones you’d add, put them in comments.

There is all guts and very little glory in corporate communications. My biggest career wins are efforts no one will ever see. Or I can’t speak of them. They don’t have metrics and weren’t celebrated. That’s because some of the most important efforts led by communications leaders are: --> Killing or mitigating a negative story through work with journalists --> Mitigating a crisis or issue with scenario planning and seeing around the corner --> Orchestrating leadership change communications to make as seamless and painless as possible --> Leading organizational narratives or purpose/mission/vision changes that guides everyone within organization --> Jumping into HR-related needs, from reduction-in-force (RIFs, aka layoffs) to renewal of benefits, so the organization has a as clear of communication as possible --> Guiding decision-making through stakeholder analysis, audience research and having a pulse of an organization. It may just be a simple comment in a leadership meeting that changes the course of decisions. --> Influencing partners teams, such as marketing, on direction to take with content, social, etc. --> Syncing with legal on … well, everything … so that the brand/company is protected --> Creating alignment amongst leaders so everyone is rowing in the same direction --> Connecting dots and facilitating to consensus with teams --> Engaging all the relevant stakeholders to assure understanding, participation and support --> Making executives look good in front of the board, employees, investors, partners and media And that’s on a Monday. With a number of elections wrapping up, going on, or getting started, and with respiratory illness season underway and the work to encourage people to get updated vaccines, I've been thinking a great deal about audience and strategic communications planning lately. In particular, I've been ruminating about polarization of ideas and what it means for strategic communications and planning - and, more specifically, strategic and modern media relations. I'm curious, to this trusted network, what things you've adapted recently in your profession to help meet the needs of your organization? I've been contemplating advice on engaging more with influencers (thinking back to Malcolm Gladwell's guidance in 'The Tipping Point' and his recent book updating those theories, 'Revenge of the Tipping Point' which I intend to read soon) to help with ethically guiding people toward evidence-based approaches. But I'm also mindful of the guidance provided through Edelman / Edelman Canada Trust Barometer findings around behaviour and change management, and specially the reality that echo chambers are hard to combat in this field. What strategies are working for you in this space - especially on issues where there are clearly divides (e.g. political choices, scientific matters, health issues, referendums, etc....)? This Month’s Feature: The Pitfalls of Multicultural Marketing: Why Cultural Nuances Matter The term "multicultural marketing" is often used as a catch-all phrase to describe efforts aimed at reaching diverse audiences. It’s a term that’s become synonymous with inclusivity, but it’s also one that can be dangerously oversimplified. The reality is that grouping communities into a single communication strategy overlooks the unique cultural nuances, values, and experiences of each group. To build authentic connections, marketers must move beyond the one-size-fits-all approach and dig deeper to understand the individual cultures they are engaging with. In this post, we’ll explore the pitfalls of oversimplified multicultural marketing and the benefits of a more culturally informed approach.   The Monolith Myth: Not All Communities Are the Same  When marketing campaigns attempt to engage “multicultural audiences,” they often fall into the trap of assuming that these diverse communities share the same experiences, preferences, and values. Terms like “people of color” or “minority groups” can create an illusion of unity, but they fail to account for the vast differences between cultures. The lived experiences of Black Americans are not the same as those of Latino, Asian, or Indigenous communities, and each group has its own history, language, traditions, and challenges that shape its perspectives.   For example, healthcare disparities within the Black community may stem from centuries of medical mistrust, while in the Latino community, language barriers and immigration status may play a larger role. These distinctions are critical because they influence how individuals receive, interpret, and act upon healthcare communications.
