Best Buy has mastered the art of merging customer experience (CX) and employee experience (EX), creating a retail environment where both thrive. One of the reasons I love shopping there is the way their associates truly shine—well-trained, passionate, and ready to help. What’s impressive is that they’re not incentivized by commissions. They’re focused solely on delivering a great customer experience, which speaks to the company's commitment to integrity and trust. This culture contrasts sharply with some infamous practices in the past from previous competitors where commissions drove bad-faith sales tactics and now what customers really needed or a culture where employees could thrive. Best Buy, by removing that pressure, fosters authentic employee engagement where team members focus on genuinely helping customers, and that shows in the value customers receive to make better decisions in their purchases, which leads to greater happiness, usage, and loyalty to keep coming back vs. using other alternatives. It's this connection between CX and EX that makes Best Buy stand out in today’s retail space, and a great example of how to build long-term loyalty through great service on both ends.

Ahhh, what DEI touches, it turns to red ink sooner or later. So, let's visit one of the most iconic American brands, shall we? *Checks notes* * New CEO hails from outside the US, attempts to lead an American brand without taking so much as a half second to understand the uniquely American culture that gives the brand its cachet and loyalty to its customers * CEO then implements the following: a) DEI policies that offend its customer base; b) DEI policies that push the brand away from its iconic ICE motors to electric motors; and c) angers its union employees by announcing plans to offshore manufacturing from Wisconsin to Thailand. Competitors in the segment, Indian Motorcycles and Victory Motorcycles, bit players by size compared to H-D today, must be salivating at the coming train wreck of the dominant brand 🤣 🤣 🤣

As always love what Simon has to say here. And, the more time I spend working with leaders, the more I notice a profound connection between our parenting experiences and our leadership styles. I have always maintained that being a parent is the longest leadership role most of us will ever have. And what is true, is that it is not always an effective strategy to unconsciously allow our parenting either the way we were parented or the way we parent to drive our leadership behavior. If we can create awareness around the influence this has we can be more intentional and effective in our leadership of others, whether or not we hold a formal leadership title.

Responsible and ethical AI requires that tech leaders (regardless of function and title) are trained to explore and understand the social implications of what they are developing, marketing, and adopting. There is SO much potential to leverage technology to solve for injustice and inequity in this world. And yet…. In many cases, we are witnessing folks get distracted by external pressures (investor expectations) and internal pressures (unconscious bias/need for status, social safety and belonging). When the rubber hits the road, it can be easy to ignore how we may be unintentionally causing harm - especially when it doesn’t impact us directly - and even more so when the ‘cost’ of doing the right thing feels too expensive or risky.
