Talking with dealers and OEMs, sales are getting harder. Inventory is building. Lead Conversions are dropping. This is one area where dealers and OEMs don't really have much insight. I've sat in countless meetings with dealers and OEM about this topic for over a decade and no-one really has got much of a clue on why they are no closing deals. So whatever data you have now on why you are losing sales, it's not enough. There is a better way. A recent @AutoNews article highlighted a CarEdge community survey revealing that 20 percent of consumers felt the #dealership was pressuring them to purchase accessories or #FandI coverage. With 500 respondents, the survey also found that 14 percent of buyers were dissatisfied with the F&I products available, centered around a lack of knowledge about the terms of the products. Trying to find incremental sales and gross profit at dealerships is always hard work. But there are a number of areas (in sales departments) that small gains can be made and these small gains add up in cumulative manner to large gains. Some of these areas include: - Lead conversion - with dealers losing on average 80% of all leads they get, this is the biggest area sales managers can impact. To sell 100 units pm, you need around 500 leads. So with 400 lost leads per month, dealers really need to know that these are truly "lost" or can be recovered. The sales team alone cannot do this. Some prospects just don't click with some sales staff. So who is going to check? - Finance penetration - many dealers (and sales managers) think finance is at the end of the food chain. But all high-performing dealers make finance a critical "up-front" part of the sales process. At the same time, more customers are transacting digitally and uncompetitive dealers are just missing out because their sales systems can't deal like this. Finance can close more deals, finance can increase gross profit. People who take finance tend to be more loyal than those who don't. If you are getting below 30% finance penetration, your team and processes are just not good enough. There's a lot more money on the table you are missing out on. And 30% is only average - it's not good. There's a few other areas in sales departments which marginal gains can look small but impact the bottom line significantly over time. No one can radically transform your sales performance in minutes. But - there are processes and there are systems that can help. We are on the cusp of the supply chain crisis anniversary back in July 2021, when we witnessed inventories plummet from 2 million to 800,000 in a span of a few months. "Leasing is fine in May, and in June it will be OK, but it's going to come to a screeching halt in July," because leasing returns will dry up, warned Tyson Jominy, vice president of data and analytics at J.D.
