Wholesale power prices for new capacity spiked higher in an auction this week at the PJM Interconnection, which serves the Northeast (including Dominion and Northern Virginia). Analysts say strong demand from data centers are among the reasons, along with generation plant retirements and grid planning snafus. Some data points from Utility Dive: - Analysts say retail price impact is "unclear," but capacity costs were about 8% of customer bills last year. - About two-thirds of the new capacity is sourced from fossil fuels, with nuclear at 21% and wind, solar and hydro at 7%. - Stronger pricing should attract new generation, but interconnection and transmission challenges remain. FERC has approved interconnection reform - and this is *generally* good for the energy transition. That said the devil in in the details of how states and utilities implement these changes. Some improvements like penalties assessed against utilities for tardy studies, trying to clean out queue squatters, and expressly identifying certain technical flexibility into interconnection design are good. However, we have specifically seen "Cluster Studies" and higher financial security requirements stymie development and create very costly and endless loops of re-studies in many markets (utility and DG). No matter how much or how fast we build renewable energy projects, Distributed Energy Resources (#DERs) like Enchanted Rock's natural gas #microgrids will need to play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid during peak demand periods. This article does a great job of explaining how these flexible and scalable energy solutions can quickly adjust power supply, reducing the strain on traditional grid infrastructure and minimizing the need for expensive, energy-intensive peaker plants. #gridsupport #powergeneration #resiliency #generators

Today, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission published its new rule on transmission and cost allocation, with new requirements for electric transmission providers. The rule aligns with several recommendations highlighted in our recent report: https://lnkd.in/exqHaMAa   Adequate planning for new transmission is critical to facilitate the clean energy transition and help manage unprecedented load growth on the U.S. electric grid. And effective planning makes decisions about how costs are allocated much easier.   I encourage you to read the report, which includes more specific recommendations to inform effective implementation of the final rule across regions. We recommend that Congress consider additional federal financial assistance to ease the strain on ratepayers as new transmission infrastructure is built out. And we recommend that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) help improve long-term projections of transmission needs and enable greater stakeholder participation in planning processes. #electricity #grid #transmission #power
