  • A configurational approach for analyzing cultural values and performance in Global Virtual Teams

Although there have been decades of research on the effect of cultural values on team effectiveness outcomes, knowledge of the interdependencies of team cultural values for explaining team performance remains nascent. Using a configurational qualitative approach, this study explores how cultural values combine and collectively contribute to the effectiveness of Global Virtual Teams (GVTs). We perform a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on a data set of 1847 individuals nested within 396 GVTs who participated in an international business consulting project. The results demonstrate that cultural values work together to achieve high levels of team performance rather than function independently. The results also show that different cultural value configurations could be equally effective at producing the same outcome, and that the presence of gender egalitarianism and the absence of power distance are the most important for producing the outcome. We discuss implications for practice and future research.

  • From Organizational Oneness to Organizational Wellness: The Role of Individuals, Teams, and Organizations from a Whole Systems Framework

    SpringerLink

Etymologically oneness (or wholeness) has roots in Anglo-Saxon language (originally named as hal) meaning healthy, whole, or holy (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary 2005) while the Sanskrit root is ‘sampoorna’ meaning totality, completeness, and wholeness (Apte, 2004). Having roots in theories of physics and cosmology, on a personal level, oneness implies a sense of connectedness to our worlds (Miller, 2006) both social and physical, and to everything around us that represents life. Having roots in theories of physics and cosmology, on a personal level, oneness implies a sense of connectedness to our worlds (Miller, 2006) both social and physical, and to everything around us that represents life. The types of connections being defined are: 1. Intrapersonal, 2. Interpersonal, and 3. Transpersonal (Johnson, 2005). The human system is composed of four systems: Mind, body, emotion, and energy. Like an organization, a human is also a system, composed of parts, interrelationships between those parts, and something that goes beyond those interrelationships. An organization is another system, operating similarly, albeit on a larger scope. Therefore, humans are systems inside the organizational systems. Thinking about the humans as whole systems, considering them as active agents playing critical roles inside the organizations, we can think of the role of consciousness at all levels: individual, work unit/team level and organizational. For organizations to provide a healthy space for employees’ health and well-being, culture seems to be prominent. The relationship between personal-organizational wellness thus depends on many factors at different levels in terms of both structure and process.

The current study aims to understand the mechanisms underlying the predictive relationship between mindfulness and organizational citizenship behaviors especially targeted for other individuals inside the organizations. As part of this relationship model, oneness behaviors were suggested as an actor of mediation. A sample of 281 blue collar employees participated for the study with employing a multi-source data gathering method. In line with the self-regulation and Buddhist based conceptualizations, and previous related research, statistical analyses revealed significant effects of mindfulness on organizational citizenship behavior towards individuals (OCBI) after controlling demographic variables, and showed fully mediated roles of one and other sub dimensions in mindfulness-OCBI interaction. The current study brings a novel approach to mindfulness and organizational citizenship relationship by including oneness behaviors inside the research model while stressing the importance of interconnectedness and how it could be practiced inside the organizations.

  • Cohesion and performance in global virtual teams: the moderating role of technical skills

    European Journal of International Management

This study assesses the extent to which cohesion affects
performance in Global Virtual Teams (GVTs) and whether this effect depends
on team members’ technical skills. Data are collected from X-Culture, a large-
scale experiential learning project involving business students dispersed
globally and relying on ‘virtual’ electronic communication tools to solve
business problems presented by multinational companies. The total number of

performance in Global Virtual Teams (GVTs) and whether this effect depends
on team members’ technical skills. Data are collected from X-Culture, a large-
scale experiential learning project involving business students dispersed
globally and relying on ‘virtual’ electronic communication tools to solve
business problems presented by multinational companies. The total number of
participants we use for this study is 3001 individuals working in 679 GVTs.
Results indicate that team cohesion is positively and significantly related to
team performance when team members’ skills are high, but is not significantly
related to team performance when team members’ skills are low. Based on the
empirical results, the influence of cohesion on team performance should be
predicated on the team characteristics. This study suggests the existence of
boundary conditions to the cohesion-performance relationship and proposes the
use of the concept of ‘expeditious cohesion’ in GVTs.

  • Leading as One: Inclusive Leadership Through Unity Consciousness and the Act of Oneness

    Routledge/Taylor & Francis

It is now time to take real action to tap the real cause of the problem, which is the level and type of consciousness. That action first belongs to the leaders of tomorrow. It is now time to take real action to tap the real cause of the problem, which is the level and type of consciousness. That action first belongs to the leaders of tomorrow. Starting from within, leaders need to achieve oneness inside of their own selves first. For leaders, it is a necessity to be One, which means to be balanced as an individual, undivided as mind-body and soul so that he or she can create oneness around him- or herself. As the body needs the brain to function in harmony, to think and to lead life effectively, organizations need leaders to follow their visions. If leaders know how to operate and behave from the top level of beingness and unity consciousness, the world would change from the inside out.

The main purpose of the present study is to test whether factor structure and measurement construct of Oneness Behaviors Scale is valid on the Indian sample. A total of 1040 participants (651 from Turkey 389 from India) participated in the study for testing the cross-cultural equivalence of the scale. The results demonstrated limited partial invariance of oneness scale across Turkish and Indian samples with suggesting most of items have been perceived and understood differently, even factorial structure is similar. With the very limited findings of invariant items between these cultures, making further tests would add to our understanding of oneness behaviors in terms of both research and practice.

The current work outlines the necessity and the significance of the concept of Oneness for our inner and outer lives including organizations and societies. Oneness, an underrepresented term in the literature, has been approached from many angles including science, philosophy, self, and finally from an organizational standpoint. As oneness implies healthy way of being that involves the expanded self, it is imperative for our future that holds potentials for evolutionary growth, especially with the help of elevated consciousness. Understanding and cultivation of oneness would be incomplete if we do not consider the intra- and interpersonal underpinnings. Like parts and their relationship with wholes, organizations also can be considered to be wholes made up of individual members and groups which all can be studied under the umbrella of oneness. If we would like to make oneness a reality for the organizations, carving out the true essence of us humans can be a viable path. If, on the other hand, oneness is an idealized state of being, enabling consciousness at all levels by making sure certain competencies are there at the individual level, along with related leadership practices, made easier by a learning organization praxis and culture all seem to provide a path that leads to a healthy future for the organizations.

The current study aims to explore the validity and reliability characteristics of the self-reflection and insight scale originally developed by Grant et al. (Soc Behav Pers 30(8):821–836, 2002). The study includes two convenience samples, comprising a total of 659 university students. The test–retest reliability study was carried out in a private university in Istanbul. The validity study was carried out in a state university that is located in Samsun, a city in the black sea region of Turkey. Both schools recruit students coming from various regions in Turkey. The results revealed a 10-item scale as a better fit compared to the original 20-item scale. The presence of both subfactors self-reflection and insight were confirmed. The Cronbach’s alpha for the whole scale was .70, .80 for the self-reflection and .65 for the insight subscales. The convergent and discriminant validity analyses revealed a negative relationship between private self-consciousness and insight scores, positive relationship between self-reflection and social anxiety plus external locus of control. There was no significant relationship between private self-consciousness and self-reflection scores. A negative relationship was found between insight and public self-consciousness, a positive relationship between mindfulness and insight scores, and finally a nonsignificant relationship between narcissism and insight scores.

As part of our query that required completion of six separate studies, we have come up with a behavioral scale comprised of two factors. Focus on one’s self reflected acting based solely on one’s own needs and interests, consideration of the other represented behaving by taking into consideration who is also present in one’s environment.
