🌍 Exciting News in Global Healthcare IT! 🏥 Epic has now emerged as the leader in hospital EHR market share worldwide, thanks to significant contract wins in Canada and Australia, according to the latest KLAS Research's Global (Non-US) EHR Market Share 2024 report. In 2023 alone, Epic expanded its global footprint by adding 203 hospitals and 24,117 beds outside the U.S. A major contribution came from Australia, particularly New South Wales, where Epic secured a deal to implement its systems across 191 hospitals, many of which transitioned from Oracle Health. Meanwhile, Oracle Health and Meditech also saw growth, adding 66 hospitals and 9,279 beds, and 43 hospitals and 6,686 beds internationally, respectively. Another notable contender, Dedalus, is rapidly advancing, adding 147 hospitals and planning for 31,424 beds as migrations finalize. Major contracts in Italy and Latin America fueled their expansion. This activity marks a record high with KLAS validating 186 EHR purchases across 734 hospitals outside the U.S. last year. In the U.S. market, Epic continues to dominate in acute care hospital settings, adding 153 hospitals and 28,788 beds in 2023. Notably, 77 of these hospitals switched from other legacy EHR systems to Epic, reinforcing its leading position with 39.1% market share. The expanding global landscape of EHR demonstrates a significant shift in healthcare technology, emphasizing the increasing adoption and integration of advanced systems worldwide. This new EHR will feature Oracle's clinical AI agent, voice-activated navigation, and Health Data Intelligence, which integrates patient data from over 300 sources to enhance clinical workflows and improve patient outcomes. The platform aims to replace traditional EHRs, which often dictate rigid workflows, with a more dynamic system that allows for personalized care plans. Oracle Health emphasizes that the new EHR is a complete reinvention rather than an upgrade of the previous Cerner system. This is an interesting article because EHR companies, like Epic and Oracle's Cerner, have made siloing data a major part of their business model. Overall, I like EPIC’s ability to review records from other EPIC shops. It also has a nod to interoperability with its “Care Everywhere“ feature. However, this is often a disorganized and outdated collection of information. Using it requires a ninja level of both tech expertise and medical knowledge possessed mainly by younger physicians and chief residents. I am a fan (and advisor) of companies like Zus Health focused on user-friendly, comprehensive, and up-to-date interoperable health care data tools.

Value based care (VBC) 1.0 language was heavily oriented to language like "disruption". This language was like a punch in the mouth and was effective at building awareness of new opportunity - but disruptive punches to the jaw don't sound like a very attractive end state. It sounds pretty painful, and maybe that is one reason why VBC adoption has stagnated. VBC 2.0 needs to be about integration and partnership so that we can start to bring real value to patients and the provider organizations who serve them - and do that at scale. The pre-eminent leader in health plan clinical guidelines coming together with the most innovative AI provider of utilization management technology is a perfect example of this new paradigm. Kudos to the MCG Health and Cohere Health teams taking a leadership role to make the health care system work better for all.

Healthcare Reinvention: Beyond Digital Transformation to Deliver Outcomes by Design Healthcare faces critical challenges: provider shortages, rising costs, access issues, and an aging population. Despite decades investing in digital transformation, process optimization, incremental innovation, and technology, organizations have struggled to deliver expected value and ROI (outcomes, efficiencies and cost-effectiveness). Even the recent push for AI adoption has not generated the expected value. The problem may lie in the approach. The old processes were digitized without changing the underlying models, behaviors, and rules that drive current processes. More time is spent on the technology than asking why things are done and how they could be done.  A push to standardize has stifled entrepreneurship. It’s time to reimagine better ways to create value. The paradigm shift is from “transformation” to reinvention. Reinvention requires: 1. Questioning every aspect of the current model and our actions, 2. Reimagining staff utilization along with facility and resource needs, 3. Rethinking policies to incentivize better outcomes, 4. Using data as the core asset across the care continuum and each patient’s journey. Successful reinvention requires more than implementing new technologies. It demands: Starting with clearly defined outcomes and goals, Developing business plans with actions and measurable objectives, Removing unnecessary tasks and non-value-add activities, Embracing disruption to achieve transformative change (>25% improvement from baseline), Investing in proven change management so change is seen as an asset, not a barrier. Technology is an essential enabler but should never be the primary focus. Significant improvements in outcomes and productivity can be achieved without new technology. GenAI and emerging technologies offer potential value, but only when/if applied strategically to reimagined processes and care models. Reinvention cannot occur in silos. Separating digital health from traditional health or virtual from in person care negates the potential value of truly reimagined healthcare operations. A Virtual First Mindset can accelerate reinvention, create access, expand capacity, and reduce cost while improving patient and staff satisfaction. Requiring some disruption, reinvention will deliver immediate value to all stakeholders while empowering everyone to contribute to ongoing improvements. We are thrilled to share that HFS Research named Cognizant as a Market Leader in its "HFS Horizons: Healthcare Payer Service Providers, 2024" report. The study, which included input from 350 health plans and 50 technology partners, evaluated 45 suppliers on four dimensions—value proposition, capabilities, go-to-market and outcomes delivered. It also assessed the ability to address the quadruple aim of healthcare—cost, experience, health outcomes, and health equity.
