Homelessness and inadequate housing affect 1.6 billion people worldwide, according to the United Nations Secretary General. I’m inspired by the collaboration DePaul University’s Ruff Institute of Global Homelessness and United Nations Human Settlements Programme to work with mayors from around the world to address this problem.  They created the International Mayors Council on Homelessness, convening mayors and leaders from three continents. They will share tactics that have worked and bring mayoral perspectives into the UN agenda. Everyone wants to live in a safe and vibrant neighborhood. Yet, too many neighborhoods have deteriorated to the point where neither of these baseline conditions are present. I'd like to live in a Chicago where every neighborhood has basic amenities that are walkable, where there are a variety of housing options with various price points, and where there is a virtuous cycle of business development. I don't think there is any debate on the statement above. However, reasonable people can disagree on how we get from where we are now to where we want to be. Do you have a favorite part of your job? This. Is. Mine! Working with donors who want to impact our students’ lives by creating scholarships to help them further their education, is the best! When you are able to bring the donor and the student together at a scholarship reception, so they can meet, talk about the student’s classes, dreams, and aspirations and receive a heartfelt “thank you” from the student…this is AWESOME! This event humanizes the scholarships for the students. They are able to learn more about “why” the donor established their scholarship. Scholarships can honor the memory of a loved one or preserve the legacy of an individual, family, or organization; these scholarships serve as a lasting tribute while helping students succeed. Many donors want to support education and make a positive impact on students' lives; they may have benefited from scholarships themselves and want to help the next generation. Businesses or organizations may establish scholarships to support students who could potentially become future employees. This is common in fields facing talent shortages, like skilled trades and technical industries. We are so grateful to all of our donors for their gifts that help our students succeed!

Working on a report comparing these data findings to the experiences of Black women in the workplace. But here are 5 research reframing considerations that need to shift so we can best move towards solutions: 1. Instead of “Black girls receive more frequent and severe discipline,” we need to move to “teachers discipline Black girls more frequently and more severely.” 2. Why this matters: the historical narrative of the relationship between Black bodies and punishment is one of correction and corporal violence—we are seen as “bad” inherently, especially when we don’t conform to the status quo (which is automatically deemed right). Therefore, we deserve to be punish harshly. And frequently (‘cuz we have thicker skin and skulls and are so hard headed—you know, according to “science”). We have yet to unteach this flawed, inhumane ideology. 3. Reframing is also necessary because Black girls are kids. Yup, I know it’s hard to believe, but we start as babies and then grow into kids. For certain kids to endure more punishment than other kids should make us question the environment and those with power. 4. We are also punished more for our assertiveness. Our development stages are a threat to those who can’t stand us being empowered, loud, liked or possessing “power” i.e. you tell a joke and the class laughs or you blurt out the right answer because you can do long division in your head while others need pen and paper. That is viewed as “defiance” (in the same way our genius is seen as “insubordinate” at times). 5. Finally, many reports leading up to this GAO study reinforce what Black people have been saying all along—in classrooms and the workplace. It’s time for us to not only value our experiences as “qualitative data,” but to signify research with a simple “Breaking: Black people were right all along.
