Much has been written in the last year about skin substitutes regarding coverage and reimbursement. The issues at hand are escalating costs while many products have unproven efficacy.     Last September, there was a proposed LCD change (which ultimately failed) by three MACs who jointly postulated that if there were no clinical studies, and if a product showed no evidence of scaffolding into which a wound could produce new tissue, then a product should not be covered or reimbursed. Since then, the market has continued to escalate with higher prices and little clinical evidence. Questions around ASP reporting and proper pricing have also been in abundance. The word insanity has been tossed around.    We believe the government is a rational if not a benevolent entity that in healthcare intends to provide efficacious, cost effective, and safe products and services to its beneficiaries through skilled and honorable clinicians. However, we know the government operates in multiple silos with conflicting mandates, all of which make it difficult to execute needed improvements, regardless of intent.    If one were to consider the popular definition of insanity; “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result,” it seems plausible that government will act in the future to cull the rampant expansion of costs in wound care using similar methods they have tried in the past.  We believe the government will succeed at some point soon, with basically the same type of restrictions on skin substitutes that they have proposed in the past, but focused on supportive clinical evidence before price controls.    Because of the confidence we share in the BioREtain process developed by BioStem Technologies, and in our products including AmnioWrap2, we are launching a large, multifaceted effort to produce an abundance of clinical evidence as rapidly as possible.     Put simply, we know these products work, and we want to make sure beneficiaries continue to have access.     We are asking providers to help by gathering great case examples, knowing that the larger randomized trials we are working on will require much more time to assemble. How dumb are American Dermatologists? 1) they pay big dollars to their EHR company in order to to manually upload photos of skin diseases 2) they manually identify and tag diagnoses, pathology and treatments to these skin photos 3) the EHR company then sells these photos and the patients chart data to an MLAI photo identification company for huge profits 4) the MLAI company engineers AI and photo recognition software to replace dermatologists. 5) in return for the physicians investments in time and money for the EHR companies, they receive no improvements in UX, workflow, paperwork, clinical outcomes, interoperability, costs or patient safety. Eli Lilly and Company’s Zepbound was superior to Wegovy in head-to-head trial showing an average weight loss of 20.2% vs. 13.7%, at 72 weeks, from 751 participants. This equates to 47% greater weight loss with Zepbound; in addition, 31.6% of people taking Zepbound achieved at least 25% body weight loss compared to 16.1% of those taking Wegovy. Impressive stuff! On the day of the announcement, Eli Lilly shares rose 2.5% to a three-week high, adding some $19 billion to its market value and taking it over $790 billion, while Novo Nordisk's Copenhagen-listed shares fell as much as 1.8%.
