We’re all too familiar with one of digital health’s most “popular” sore spots: point solution fatigue. I’ve even written about this for the Forbes Business Council (https://buff.ly/43ADMKt) With the rising demand for GLP-1s, buyers are looking for yet another solution to help mitigate rising costs. But have they considered taking a closer look at current vendors they may have to treat chronic or cardiometabolic conditions? For example, Omada Health has been working with members taking GLP-1s since 2019 at the launch of its diabetes program - and now has a GLP-1 Care Track available across its full cardiometabolic suite, which includes diabetes prevention, diabetes, and hypertension. Buyers should provide a program that takes more than just weight loss into account. For all the talk about value-based care, progress still is very slow. Advisory Board data shows the small amount of progress made from 2017 to 2022, which varies drastically by line of business. Medicare Advantage is the primary segment driving VBC, mainly due to aligned incentives where plans and providers could get paid more through upcoding (or "appropriate coding") of patients to drive more revenue & margin through the entire system. That drove penetration of VBC in MA, and CMS has paid attention, releasing significant headwinds (v28, RADV, Stars) aimed at reducing these perceived overpayments. In other segments, VBC has been very slow to grow. Commercial VBC arrangements were essentially stagnant. Anecdotally, this is starting to change. Plan sponsors (employers) -- especially large, sophisticated ones -- are demanding more from their carriers. They want to see network arrangements that impact quality & cost. Will that be enough to drive VBC activity in the commercial space? We'll see. Employers -- the customers -- will be the ones who will drive VBC forward here. TPAs alone don't have the incentive to make changes. I remain hopeful, but skeptical. #valuebasedcare #healthtech #digitalhealth

I’ve always said that Ascendco Health is an analytics company at heart. We believe that measuring success is the only way to improve. By analyzing IUSS data within Sonar, this health system is uncovering the root causes behind its use. This empowers them to optimize instrument sets, streamline workflows, and ultimately, spend less time reacting and more time providing exceptional care for their patients. Let's be clear: IUSS is a vital tool, but it should never be a routine occurrence. The ideal scenario is a world where sterile processing teams have the resources they need to anticipate surgical needs and ensure instruments are readily available. And that's what gets me truly excited. When our technology translates into tangible improvements in patient safety, that's when the work we do becomes truly meaningful.

AI and Med Tech in Focus   Implantable Device Reverses Opioid Overdoses Researchers at MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have developed an implantable device that detects and reverses opioid overdoses by autonomously administering a dose of naloxone. Naloxone is a drug that binds to opioid receptors and blocks the effects of heroin, fentanyl and other opioids. Called iSOS, the device has sensors that continuously monitors a user’s respiratory rate, heart rate, body temperature and blood oxygen saturation and uses machine learning algorithms that are trained to recognize the signs of overdose using the cardiorespiratory data collected by the sensors. When the device detects a suspected overdose, the device buzzes and sends an alert to a user’s phone. If the alert is not cancelled, iSOS administers a rapid shot of naloxone.  The device is about the size of a stick of gum and implanted under local anesthesia. It has a wireless rechargeable battery that lasts 14 days and a 10-milligram refillable drug reservoir. ISOS has been shown to be effective in reversing the effects of overdose 96% of the time and could help people who are at the highest risk of re-overdose. Because the naloxone dose is automatically delivered in a “closed loop” survival is not predicated by timely intervention of a first responder or a bystander Further research is being done to miniaturize the size and optimize battery life.
