How do you develop your data storytelling skills and confidence?
A great icebreaker is to introduce your topic, then have people break into groups to discuss a question that will be answered by your data story. When they come together and share, they learn exponentially more and are more tuned in to what you are then going to present.

How do you develop your data storytelling skills and confidence?
Keep in mind that some will be wary of your data, as numbers can be manipulated by using percentages, absolute numbers, and different population or sample denominators. Understand the ontologic perspective of the people receiving the data. For example, people who use dietary supplements are naturally wary of data showing the dangers of using them. Showing pharmaceutical dangers data next to the dietary supplements data will help those who need balanced perspective and the caveats of using either.

A mini-scenario in which your data are practically applicable to the audience can start the talk. Let them know how the scenario evolved in real life and how the data that were culled from it are beneficial today for the people in the room.
