Large Healthcare Technology Consulting Firms vs. Smaller Specialized Consultancies As I have discussed in previous posts, the field of technology consulting, and healthcare technology consulting in particular, is currently experiencing a downturn. Year-over-year revenues for healthcare consulting are declining, and this situation is especially challenging for smaller firms compared to their larger counterparts. Larger consultancies have the advantage of deeper cash reserves, allowing them to endure economic downturns with greater ease than smaller boutique firms. However, it is important to remember the reasons you have chosen to work with smaller firms in the past. Their specialized expertise in areas such as Revenue Cycle Management, Acute Care, or Clinical Systems Interoperability has been directly relevant to the specific issues you have encountered with your systems. Larger firms often apply generic solutions that may not be the best fit for your unique needs. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain relationships with your boutique vendors and support them whenever possible. If these specialized firms disappear, you might find yourself without the precise expertise you need when challenges arise.

There is no question that the optimism revealed in McKinsey’s latest research on generative AI is well-founded. However, I believe that as we consider the highest potential for AI’s impact on our industry, we must look at how we implement this new technology. From my discussions with physicians, it is crucial for AI to be viewed through a clinical rather than a technological lens. If AI will truly impact clinician and clinical productivity, physicians must be involved in the design, selection, and adoption of the AI solutions they ultimately use. Traditional approaches to technology development and deployment do not typically include the physicians, but as revolutionary as AI will be, we must consider new approaches to ensure everyone gets the most out of it. I have slowly started to realise that when people are talking about health data, they are often referring to a completely different thing than I think of health data. Just think of this: consumers – you and I – are at a point where we generate more data about our own health than the healthcare system generates. Every day, my smart phone records data about my sleep, my physical activity, my heart activity and my body temperature. Once a week I measure my blood pressure. I even collected my blood sugar over a few weeks. And it's all stored on my phone. Would this data be valuable for my doctor when I come to his office: absolutely. But have you ever tried showing your phone while visiting the doctor's office? My bet is the doctor wouldn't know how to handle that data. Because the Electronic Health Records aren't designed to handle this kind of data. Does this discrepancy undermine the trust in the healthcare system? I would say it does.

Interesting perspective on #TechnologicalDebt in health care by Dave Lamar focused on the provider market, but we seem the same issues within state depts and payers. While good data governance practices are key, there must be a better way to solve this common - if not universal - challenge in health care, if only by offloading some of the administrative responsibilities that require the individual management and administration of no-value-add administrative functions. #healthdata
