As the aerospace industry changes, the opportunities for small scale suppliers are shrinking. With quality and safety coming under more regulatory scrutiny after high profile incidents, airlines can’t risk having delicate supply chains that can be brought down by one non-compliant part. This, along with the desire for efficient releases of new aircraft, the increasing need for on-time delivery, and the simplification of airline production, demonstrates the importance of a large and robust supply chain. For anyone interested in manufacturing, this is a great read. I agree with Larry that the comments from interviewed industry professionals provide a nuanced picture of the state of the industry. What I make of it is: - Industry is doing well, but slowing down - The slowdown is an anticipation of the policies of the future US administration, and delay of investments related to a perception of risk - Consumption products (F&B, electronics) are doing better than investment products (machines) A deep dive into the original report could reveal interesting details. This could also provide a more differentiated view with respect to regions.

Using Data & Analytics to Set Manufacturing Strategy A Private Equity client consolidated several industrial equipment manufacturing companies. The resulting company was a $900M power player with a complex and underutilized manufacturing footprint. The goal was to optimize manufacturing capabilities and align it with the broader transformation plan. We built a model ranking the processes with a contribution to competitive advantage score (in addition to the financial & operational metrics). The result was improved plant utilization from 60% to 85% and an annual savings of $7.5M. This project shows how a strategic approach to manufacturing optimization can deliver both short-term cost savings and long-term value creation.
